The University of Georgia invites applications and nominations for the position of University Librarian & Associate Provost. The University of Georgia (UGA), a land-grant/sea-grant university, is the largest and most comprehensive educational institution in Georgia. UGA was founded in 1785 by the Georgia General Assembly as the first state-chartered university in the country. UGA is consistently ranked among the top 25 public universities in U.S. News & World Report. The University is located in Athens, approximately 65 miles northeast of Atlanta. UGA employs approximately 1,800 full-time instructional faculty and more than 7,600 full-time staff. The University’s enrollment is approaching 35,000 students including approximately 26,500 undergraduates and 8,300 graduate and professional students. Academic programs reside in 17 schools and colleges, as well as a medical partnership with Georgia Regents University housed on the UGA Health Sciences Campus, which will graduate its first class of medical students in Spring 2014. The University Libraries includes four principal on-campus facilities: the Ilah Dunlap Little Memorial Library (Main Library), the Science Library, the Zell B. Miller Learning Center, and the Richard B. Russell Special Collections Libraries Building. The University of Georgia Press and The Georgia Review literary journal, which also report to the University Librarian, are housed in the Main Library. The University Libraries shares responsibility for a number of smaller on-campus libraries, reading rooms, and materials centers, and collaborates with several UGA research facilities throughout the state. The University Libraries is comprised of 16 departments, with approximately 70 librarians, 160 staff members, and 190 student assistants. The current University Libraries budget is $22 million, including $11M allocated for library materials and resources. The University Libraries hold membership in the Association of Research Libraries, the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries, the Center for Research Libraries, and other organizations. The University Libraries plays a leading role in GALILEO, the statewide virtual library system, and other programs of the University System of Georgia. The University Librarian and Associate Provost is the chief executive officer for the University of Georgia Libraries and reports to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. The University Librarian and Associate Provost provides strategic planning and policy direction in the areas of collection development, public and technical services, budget and facilities planning, the development and implementation of emerging information technologies and digital library services, fundraising, public relations, and personnel policies, and participates in systemwide library coordination with the library directors in the University System of Georgia. The University Librarian and Associate Provost provides effective leadership and commitment to advancing the research, teaching, and service missions of the University Libraries and the University of Georgia, both on campus and in the state, as well as nationally. The University Librarian develops strong relationships with Deans of other units, the Provost, President and other University administrators. The University Librarian is a member of the University’s Senior Administration, and serves on the University Cabinet, the Provost’s Advisory Council and the University Council’s University Libraries Committee. An ALA-accredited master's degree in librarianship/information science or foreign equivalent for librarians is required; an additional graduate degree, such as a doctorate or subject masters in general studies, or in any field is preferred. A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible professional experience in an academic or research library is required; significant administrative and managerial experience in long-range planning, resource allocation, facilities planning, scholarly communication, fund raising and personnel development is preferred.
