Director of Libraries

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) seeks a director of libraries to use visionary leadership to guide both the MIT Libraries and MIT Press through times of transformation in their respective industries. Will report to the provost.

Responsibilities:

  • Secure the support and resources necessary for providing outstanding, innovative and creative collections and services to a world-class scholarly community
  • Play a prominent role in shaping the larger scholarly communication landscape at MIT and beyond
  • Grow the libraries’ resource development program
  • Foster key strategic opportunities including new modes of learning and global engagement, reshaping library spaces, and advancing MIT’s commitment and influence in the area of open access
  • Actively build and develop a diverse, skilled, and engaged workforce

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate-level degree in a field relevant to the transformations occurring in libraries and publishing
  • Demonstrated record of visionary leadership in a complex organization
  • Distinguished record of professional engagement and achievement commensurate with senior leadership positions of major research university libraries
  • Substantial planning, budget, and human resources management experience in a complex research, educational, or publishing environment
  • Strong understanding of evolving issues/trends in higher education, libraries, open access, and scholarly communication
  • Demonstrated accomplishment fostering diversity and inclusion
  • Proven experience or potential for success in development, fundraising, and public relations
  • Success building partnerships and relationships with multiple stakeholders
  • Superb oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to foster collegiality, cooperation, and consensus-building
  • Proven commitment to and success in recruitment, development, and retention of highly talented staff
  • Advanced understanding of digital technologies and trends
  • Evidence of experience with program evaluation, assessment, and data-driven decision-making
