The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a motivated, innovative, collaborative, service-oriented, and knowledgeable individual for the position of Librarian for African-American and African Studies.  The individual in this position will develop and maintain Library collections in the multidisciplinary field of African-American and African Studies, focusing on the rapidly changing academic trends in the field.      

 

Reporting to the Head of Subject Specialists for the Humanities and Social Sciences in the Research and Information Services Department, the Librarianfor African-American and African Studies will provide vision and direction in the development of outreach, instruction, and programming related to African-American and African Studies and related collections. The Librarian will deliver and help shape high quality outreach and instructional services to faculty, students and scholars by integrating new and emerging information literacy principles and technology.  The Librarian will work collaboratively with the Stone Center, African Studies Center, the Title VI Council Committee, and the Institute of African American Research to provide library support of programs and initiatives of these organizations, and will work in close collaboration with the African American Collections and Outreach Archivist and the Library’s Special Collections in outreach to local communities to develop relevant programming, collections, and services. 

 

The Librarian for African-American and African Studies has administrative and programmatic responsibility for the Sonja Haynes Stone Center Library and supports and facilitates teaching, learning, and research by directing public service initiatives for student, faculty, and scholarly and community users of the Stone Center Library; developing and maintaining collections; serving as faculty liaison for the departments that conduct research and offer programs and projects in the field; participating in the University Library's instruction program; and providing specialized research services and outreach to faculty, students and scholars.

 

The Librarian for African-American and African Studies will manage the Stone Center Library including supervision of one support staff member and graduate assistants, work-study and student workers, and will oversee and provide general and specialized public service and reference services. The person in this position will serve as a liaison to the wider Library organization by participating in library and university committees.
