The University Libraries at Virginia Tech invites applications for the position of Collection Management Librarian.  This is a full-time, 12-month faculty level position, reviewed on an annual basis.  The Collection Management Librarian reports to the director of the Jean Russell Quible Department of Collections and Technical Services.  The Collection Management Librarian will work with department leadership to advance strategic initiatives for assessment, management, marketing, and preserving library collections.  The successful candidate will work collaboratively with team leaders, subject liaison librarians, and collection managers in consortia to develop policies and procedures for managing collections. 

Responsibilities:

  • Helps establish priorities and strategies for analyzing and assessing print, microform, and digital library collections. 
  • Manages the University Libraries’ participation in regional and state collaborative collections initiatives, such as ASERL Scholars Trust and Virtual Library of Virginia.
  • Keeps abreast of developments in electronic resources management, including acquisition, preservation, and licensing.
  • Works creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both independently and as a team member at various levels within the library and the university.
  • Provides liaison support to a department within the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.

Required Qualifications:

  • ALA accredited or equivalent advanced degree
  • Evidence of experience using research-level library resources
  • Experience with library catalogs, databases, and search tools
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, analytical thinking, and initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, service-oriented, and dynamic environment
  • Knowledge of collection management practices, academic scholarly publishing and preservation issues
  • Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Excel and Access or other database program

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research experience or advanced degree in an academic subject
  • Experience with statistical analysis
  • Basic scripting knowledge in Python, PHP, or other language
  • Experience with Innovative Interfaces Inc.’s Millennium or Sierra
  • Familiarity with Google apps

 Duties:

Reports to the Director of Collections and Technical Services.

75%        Works with Collections and Technical Services leadership to advance strategic initiatives for assessing, managing, marketing, and preserving library collections:  Represents the University Libraries on regional and statewide consortia committees and working groups to coordinate shared print repositories and contributions to digital repositories. 

Responsibilities

·         Works collaboratively with department team members and subject librarians to analyze and assess print, microform, and digital library collections.  Helps to assess library collections in terms of breadth, depth, and appropriateness to teaching and research.

·         Participates in regional and state-wide collection management initiatives, such as ASERL Scholars Trust, HathiTrust, and Virtual Library of Virginia.  Identifies material to store or digitize for these and other initiatives.

·         Manages deselection processing, taking into account Virginia Tech’s role in shared collections initiatives.  Identifies overlap between print and electronic resources, and develops print retention and deselection policies.  Supervises wage staff and student assistants performing the processing.

·         Demonstrates adequacy of support for academic programs as required by accreditation review boards, and estimates the cost of resources to support new academic programs. 

·         Gathers, analyzes, and distributes data to collection managers. Develops metrics to facilitate evidence-based decision making. Collects and uses data about print and electronic resources from a variety of systems.

·         Identifies unique and specialized local items in the general collections for preservation, retention, digitization, and contribution to appropriate repositories

 15%      Provides liaison support to an academic department within the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.  Liaison responsibilities include:

·         Maintaining awareness of tools and information resources in the discipline. Participating in the liaison council.

·         Handling one-on-one reference questions coming from students and faculty and volunteering time to serve on the reference desk (optional). Working collaboratively with others to address reference questions that may require a team-based approach.

·         Maintaining awareness of trends in collection management and participating in regular discussions about collections as appropriate. Buying library materials that faculty and students request. Collaborating with Collections and Technical Services to develop and maintain collections that support research and teaching needs.

·         Taking the lead in upper-level instruction and collaborating with Learning Services and Learning Environments to develop instructional opportunities in lower-level instruction and First Year Experience courses.

·         Providing general consulting on scholarly communication issues (optional) and collaborating with Scholarly Communication and Data Curation on in-depth consults related to scholarly communication, repository, publishing, and data services, and rights assistance.

·         Attending departmental meetings and events, communicating items of news and interest from and back to the Libraries, and finding referrals to other service areas in the Libraries.

10%        Maintains breadth of professional responsibility and initiative by:

·         Maintaining current awareness of the library profession and fields of liaison responsibility;

·         Providing quality services in a professional manner with a demonstrated commitment to team efforts, service excellence and respect for others

·         Using data to analyze unit operations and support recommendations and decisions.

·         Working creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both independently and as a team member at various levels within the library and the university.

 

Employment Conditions:  Must have a criminal background check.

Work Schedule:  8-5, M-F + Evenings/Weekends as needed

Salary: $45.000-$48,000 (Commensurate with credentials and experience)
