Web Services Librarian

 

Responsibilities:

The University of Alabama seeks an energetic and innovative applicant for the position of Web Services Librarian. As part of the University Libraries’ Web Services Department, this faculty member will work in a team environment with other library faculty and staff. Reporting to the Head of Web Services, the Web Services Librarian will have numerous responsibilities that include developing web pages, web sites and managing various web development tools and library technologies. Specifically, The Web Services Librarian position assists in the management of our various WordPress installations (library blogs and associated web sites) and other web-based applications that enhance access to collections for University of Alabama patrons, furthers the web services department’s activities, and facilitates the work of library employees, students, faculty and staff. Additionally, the candidate will serve as the manager and primary point of contact for the University Libraries’ EBSCO Discovery Service application and be responsible for coordinating and resolving issues as well as finding, developing and implementing enhancements. They will work with department colleagues in maintaining and supporting websites using the WordPress Content Management System, and in developing new web applications and software tools that support our WordPress-based websites. The successful candidate will maintain currency with web technologies, software, tools, and solutions and participate in evaluation, assessment, and training efforts.

 

Qualifications:

Required: A Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution; excellent communication, interpersonal and team skills. Demonstrable web development experience using HTML and CSS. Experience working with library discovery applications, content management systems, and/or database-driven web sites and applications. Initiative, flexibility, organization, precision and problem solving skills are a must. The ability to analyze complex technical issues, and identify creative and adaptive solutions. Currency with new technologies.

 

Preferred: Experience with developing for, and administering a WordPress Content Management System. Experience developing applications with PHP, MySQL, and JavaScript in a Linux or Windows-based, web server environment. Experience with the EBSCO Discovery Service or similar systems. Experience with PhotoShop, Fireworks or other graphic design software. Working knowledge of XML. Experience with a variety of user research/usability methods. Experience with web analytics analysis. Familiarity with web accessibility standards, information architecture, content strategy for the web, and content management systems. Familiarity with mobile web and responsive design.

The University of Alabama is located in Tuscaloosa, a growing community with a population of 80,000 residents, approximately 45 minutes southwest of Birmingham. The campus is noted for its historical architecture, traditions, and Natural History Museum and unique geographical location. Current enrollment is approximately 34,000 FTE and the university enjoys a positive fiscal climate. The community and surrounding area offer a broad range of cultural and recreational activities. Salary/Benefits:

Full-time position for non-tenure-earning renewable appointment of up to three years (renewal based upon satisfactory performance review, need, and funding). Competitive salary. Excellent benefits. Moving allowance may be available.
