The University of Waterloo Library seeks a creative, dynamic and public service oriented professional librarian to fill a leadership position as Head, Special Collections & Archives.  The successful candidate will carry out the responsibilities associated with this position in the Dana Porter Library, located on the main campus.

The Doris Lewis Rare Book Room and University Archives houses over 50,000 rare books with particular subject strengths in the following areas: women's studies, local history, the history of mathematics (especially Euclid's Elements of Geometry), architecture, dance and ballet, fine printing, and urban planning.  Historical and literary archives are maintained in a variety of subject areas which, for the most part, complement the book collections. The collections are considered working collections which have been developed systematically around subjects that reflect the goals of the University of Waterloo's major teaching and research programmes.

The University of Waterloo Archives is also part of Special Collections & Archives.  The University Archives houses physical and electronic official records of the University of Waterloo. Included are correspondence, reports, minutes, publications, architectural and building plans, photographs, ephemera, and memorabilia.

The University of Waterloo Library is a member of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), and the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL).  The Library is a member of the Tri-University Group (TUG), along with member libraries at the University of Guelph and Wilfrid Laurier University, serving a combined student population of over 76,000, combined holdings exceeding 5 million, and combined budgets exceeding $45 million.  The Tri-University Group manages shared technology and a remote storage facility, and enables collaborative projects across the three library systems.

Responsibilities:
Within the context of a rapidly evolving print and digital environment, the incumbent is responsible for the effective planning, support and management of collections and services in the Doris Lewis Rare Book Room and the University Archives.  By collaboration with faculty, staff and students, s/he ensures and advances the role for special collections in the research, teaching and learning of the University.   The Head, Special Collections & Archives reports to the Associate University Librarian, Research & Digital Discovery Services.

Education:
* ALA-accredited Master of Library Science degree, or equivalent.

Qualifications:
* Demonstrated progressive responsibility and experience in leadership and management with a proven track record of achievement and success within a higher education environment;
* Academic research library experience within a rapidly evolving print and digital environment. 
* Competencies include:
o collections management
o archival science
o strategic thinking
o project management
o human resources management
o metadata
o information technology
o instruction and training
o interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
o awareness of institutional compliance and liability obligations
* Technical skills include:
o awareness of web presence and digitization standards and best practices, including imaging, tools, metadata, access, storage and preservation
o awareness of institutional compliance and liability obligations

Asset:
* experience with digitization of special collections and/or archival materials
