Skidmore College seeks a creative and dynamic College Librarian to provide excellent leadership, vision, and direction for the library and its archives.

Skidmore is a highly selective, nationally ranked liberal arts college, currently enrolling more than 2,600 students in approximately fifty degree programs, including programs in both traditional liberal arts and pre-professional disciplines. The College’s principal mission is the education of predominantly full-time undergraduates, a diverse population of talented students who are eager to engage in the learning process. Skidmore’s faculty and staff create a challenging yet supportive environment that cultivates students’ intellectual and personal excellence, encouraging them to expand their expectations of themselves while engaging in research, scholarship, and study. In keeping with the College’s founding principle of linking theoretical with applied learning – and its more recent expression, “Creative Thought Matters” – the Skidmore curriculum balances a commitment to the liberal arts with an emphasis on interdisciplinarity, along with preparation for professions, careers, and community leadership.

Skidmore’s campus is located in what was, at the turn of the twentieth century, a beautiful park of summer residences in Saratoga Springs, New York. The city’s many attractions include the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, ten museums, a number of spas, and the famed Saratoga Race Course for thoroughbred horse racing. Set in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, Saratoga Springs is a half-hour drive from the New York State capital at Albany and a three-hour drive from New York City, Boston, and Montreal.

The College Librarian works closely with the Library faculty and staff, teaching faculty, Dean of the Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Information Technology, and other academic support departments to develop information policies, resources, and services in support of the mission of the College. Working with multiple constituencies, the College Librarian identifies the information needs of the campus, provides leadership in stimulating program development to meet those needs, articulates the needs and services of the library, and advocates for the library’s efforts to serve the community. The College Librarian reports directly to the Dean of the Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs and holds a 12-month administrative appointment with faculty rank.

The College Librarian will guide the library in key initiatives: providing a vision for the library and its central role in a liberal arts college; improving partnerships on and beyond the campus; collaborating in the use of technology in and beyond the library; and working to help support and represent the library nationally. The College is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their experience, research, and service.

Minimum additional qualifications include an ALA-accredited Master's degree in library or information science, at least ten years of relevant and progressively responsible experience in library administration, and demonstrated effective leadership and management experience in high-level positions in an academic library setting.

Review of application materials will begin in the fall and will continue until the position is filled. Nominations, inquiries and applications, including letter of interest and curriculum vitae, should be forwarded, in confidence, to:
Steve Leo, Vice President
Matthew Bunting, Senior Associate
Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates, LP
