Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice President for Information Services and University Librarian (VP/UL). As an integral part of the educational experience, the Rutgers University Libraries are an invaluable resource for students, faculty, staff, alumni and the broader community. Comprising 28 libraries, centers, and reading rooms and serving the entire University—Rutgers University-Camden, Rutgers University-New Brunswick, Rutgers University-Newark, and Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences—all reporting to the Vice President for Information Services and University Librarian, the Libraries operate as a unified system with consolidated research and instructional services, technical services, and collection development functions, including a pioneering institutional repository and innovative scholarly digital initiatives. The Rutgers University Libraries’ mission is to support and enrich the instructional, research, and public service missions of the University through the stewardship of scholarly information and the delivery of information services.
Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the VP/UL serves as the Libraries’ chief administrative and academic officer with overall responsibility for library operations and services, including strategic planning, operational planning and assessment, and oversight and management of a $34 million budget. The VP/UL leads and directs personnel resources of approximately 275 faculty and staff members, collection development and management, information and research services, information technology infrastructure and initiatives, design of library facilities, fund raising, public relations, and state, regional, national, and international collaborative activities and programs.
Rutgers seeks a visionary leader, an experienced executive, distinguished scholar, and exceptional communicator and relationship builder who will chart a course for the institution to thrive in a period of profound transition for academic libraries. The successful candidate must also show commitment to advancing diversity and its values within the Libraries and the University and to working in a multicultural environment. She/he will be entrepreneurial and proactive to ensure the Rutgers University Libraries remain at the forefront of this change and will demonstrate an understanding of emerging trends in academic librarianship and higher education. The successful candidate will have experience enabling her/him to lead in a premier academic setting, including seven to ten years of senior-level academic library management experience and a distinguished record of scholarship appropriate to an appointment with tenure. In addition, she/he will demonstrate leadership and commitment to advancing the research, teaching and service missions of the University and the Libraries and act as the official representative and advocate for the Libraries within the university and externally. The candidate must have a Master’s in library science from an ALA-accredited institution; an additional Master’s degree or other advanced degree is preferred.
