Librarian, Department Head

Position Focus:  Reporting to the Director of Beinecke Library, the Head of Access Services provides leadership and direction of a broad range of services and programs which support use of Beinecke collections by Yale faculty, students and the international scholarly community. The Head of Access Services must have a strong commitment to public service, a proven ability to interact effectively and productively with diverse individuals and groups, and an understanding of and commitment to the role of technology in special collections. The incumbent will provide leadership, instill high standards of service and administer the department’s resources to provide excellent services. The incumbent is responsible for long-range strategic planning for Beinecke’s Access Services and serves on Beinecke’s senior management team.

The incumbent leads a staff of 16 FTE, who are the primary contact for researchers, classes, and virtual users of the collections. The incumbent fosters a creative collaborative, and team oriented work-environment and facilitates communication and coordination within Beinecke and the University Library.

Works collaboratively with Beinecke and University Library staff to initiate projects and explore innovative technologies for incorporation into library’s programs. Contributes technical expertise to improve system-wide circulation and access, research support and instruction services. Implements program of usability and assessment of services. Participates in developing, evaluating and implementing system-wide policies and procedures, represents the Library on committees.

Develops, oversees and implements a range of services for researchers including the reading room, classroom, photo duplication, and reference services, as well as support for, exhibitions, library publications, master classes, and the fellowship program. Evaluates the way services are offered. Implements new procedures and technologies to ensure efficient and effective services. Maintains policy and procedural manuals. Develops plans for managing expanded number of classrooms.

Directs stacks maintenance and space management. Works with the Library Shelving Facility staff to ensure prompt and safe transport of material among the Beinecke Library operations.

With the Research Services Librarian and in coordination with curatorial staff, plans and implements reference, bibliographic instruction, and outreach activities.

Required Education, Skills and Experience: 

·         Master's degree from an ALA accredited library school or equivalent accredited degree. In selected instances, a post graduate degree in museum studies or a related discipline may be substituted for a master's degree in library science.

·         Minimum of 5 years of related professional experience required.

·         Demonstrated skills supervising staff and managing services. Demonstrated significant background in special collection public services. Demonstrated ability working with special collection reference sources.

·         Excellent management skills with a strong commitment to fostering growth and development of others. Demonstrated ability in working with large-scale transition management, and workflow analysis and improvement.

·         Demonstrated ability to identify and analyze problems, especially in the context of technology initiatives related to special collections. Demonstrated experience with assessment of services.

·         Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively to develop productive partnerships within/across organizations. Effective ability in developing innovative processes and solutions with a team-based approach.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience: 

·         At least 5 years’ experience in special collections public services.

·         Experience in a labor union environment.

·         Demonstrated experience working with Aeon including creating documentation and implementation.

·         Strong commitment to service and ability to work with a diverse community.
