The University of Chicago Library seeks a special collections project cataloger for a two (2) year term position, with the possibility of renewal.  Under the direction of the Rare Books Librarian, the cataloger is responsible for original and complex copy cataloging of the University of Chicago Library's Special Collections Research Center's printed materials and other formats using RDA, AACRII, and Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials, along with other tools.  The Library is a member of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging, and descriptive cataloging is performed in accordance with national standards.

The cataloger collaborates with other catalogers and library staff to establish and maintain local policies and procedures for bibliographic and metadata services, projects, and other activities that affect the library's integrated library system, search engines, and overall access to the collections.  He/she keeps abreast of the current trends and beset practices for rare materials bibliographic and metadata services.  The cataloger also serves on library committees and participates in library-wide programs and activities. 

The cataloger will be expected to possess the following skills: flexibility about performing different cataloging tasks as departmental needs change, and to show responsiveness and willingness to work on special projects or assignments; a strong service orientation; analytical, communication, and training skills; ability to prioritize work to ensure that department goals are realized; and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team in a production-oriented, dynamic environment, with a commitment to professional development and growth..

The cataloger will be expected to make use of the following tools to perform original and complex copy cataloging with all associated authority work: RDA (Resource Description and Access); Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd ed.; Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials; national standards for rare materials cataloging, including RBMS vocabularies; Library of Congress Program for Cooperative Cataloging Policy Statements; Library of Congress Classification via Classweb; Library of Congress Subject Headings via OCLC's authority file, the Subject Cataloging Manual, and the PCC SACO Manual via the Cataloger's Desktop; MARC 21 formats for bibliographic and authority data; NACO manual for authority work.

 Required Qualifications: Library degree from an ALA-accredited institution; reading knowledge of one or more western non-English European languages; demonstrated strong computer skills; ability to meet local expectations and national standards for throughput and metadata quality; willingness to serve on committees and working groups at the departmental, divisional, and/or Library level; ability to communicate effectively and constructively with colleagues, with supervisors, and with other staff, both within and outside the department; ability to perform complex problem solving and decision making; flexibility about performing different cataloging tasks as departmental and library needs change, and to show responsiveness and willingness to work on special projects or assignments. 

Preferred Qualifications: :Previous special collections cataloging experience; advanced degree in a relevant discipline; reading knowledge of Latin or German. 

Salary and Benefits: Appointment salary based on qualifications and experience. Benefits include retirement plan, insurance, and paid time off. There is a tuition benefit plan for college age and younger children.
