Cataloging and Metadata Librarian

Howard-Tilton Memorial Library invites applications for the position of Cataloging and Metadata Librarian. This position is responsible for supporting metadata-dependent efforts to manage, expose, and share collections with users. We are seeking an innovative, energetic and team-oriented librarian who is accustomed to working in a production-focused environment. The successful candidate will have the knowledge and initiative to assist the library by ensuring the uniform application of standards for resource description of the library?s physical and digital collections.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian is a creative, detail-oriented and collaborative professional and is comfortable in a changing environment. The position works with staff in the Tulane Digital Library, Library Information Technology, Special Collections, and Technical Services to develop, implement, and evaluate procedures, standards, and workflows relating to metadata creation within the metadata ecosystem of the libraries. This position also performs both original and complex adaptive cataloging, primarily for the library?s special collections, in a variety of formats. The incumbent creates and edits non-MARC metadata using MODS, EAD, MADS, and other schema adopted by the library; serves as the Division?s resource person for open linked data in library systems; participates in the assessment and continuous improvement of operations and services; and contributes and updates NACO authority records.

 

Responsibilities include:

* Collaborates with Tulane Digital Library and Library Information Technology staff to develop, implement, and evaluate procedures, standards, and workflows for non-MARC metadata creation. Coordinates metadata creation in MARC and non-MARC formats for library resources that are collected in multiple formats?e.g., theses & dissertations in print and electronic format, digitization and cataloging of manuscript collections, etc. Creates, enhances, and performs quality control on non-MARC metadata for digital collections. Adheres to local policies and international best practices using a variety of metadata schemes. Develops metadata crosswalks and data conversion routines for managing and integrating diverse metadata, including MARC and non-MARC formats, to facilitate interoperable discovery across systems. Collaborates in the selection, design, and adaptation of metadata schema, controlled vocabularies, and data dictionaries. Identifies new technologies and trends in metadata management that have potential for new and improved library services. Participates in planning, implementation, and management library digital initiatives in support of library and university strategic goals. Participates in the implementation and ongoing administration of open linked data in library systems. Maintains knowledge of current description standards such as RDA, Linked Data/BIBFRAME, and emerging metadata standards.

* Performs original and complex adapted cataloging using MARC, RDA, and AACR2, LCSH and LCC. Contributes and updates NACO records as part of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging. Records are created and edited in OCLC and the local ILS. Collaborates with the authority control librarian on linked data initiatives that involve NACO records, including bulk export, edit, and loading of MARC and non-MARC records.

* Contributes to the work of the Tulane University Libraries, particularly Howard-Tilton Memorial Library, through service on committees, task forces, and other collaborative projects.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Required Education: MLS degree from ALA-accredited program or equivalent

 

Required Experience:

* Experience using OCLC Connexion and an integrated library system

* Experience cataloging using RDA, AACR2R, LCSH< LCC, MARC 21 formats

* Experience creating XML and MODS

* Ability to create and implement metadata crosswalks

* Evidence of cataloging and metadata workflows and services, including authority control and identity management

* Knowledge of discipline-specific controlled thesauri such as AAT, TGM, or LCGFT

* Knowledge of discovery tools and metadata practices supporting discovery, specifically in both a library and research context

* Evidence of organizational and project planning skills

* Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written

* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

* Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively in a rapidly changing and culturally diverse environment

 

Preferred Experience:

* Knowledge of academic library roles in support of data management and data management planning, including metadata support

* Experience with XSLT

* Experience with MADS, METS, EAD, or PREMIS

* Experience with a digital asset management system or digital repository

* Experience with NACO

 

Salary/Benefits:

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Appointment is likely to be made at the level of Library II but will depend on qualifications. Librarians are academic appointees; librarians do not have tenure or faculty rank, but in other respects receive the benefits of faculty members.
