The Public Library of Science (PLOS) is a San Francisco-based nonprofit Open Access publisher, innovator and advocacy organization with a mission to accelerate progress in science and medicine by leading a transformation in research communication. Since its founding in 2001, PLOS has launched 7 open access journals whose contents are made freely available immediately upon publication. In the past year PLOS published nearly 30,000 articles, with revenues of $46 million, and the open access business model we pioneered now accounts for 15-20% of the science publishing market.
We are seeking a dynamic CEO to build on this decade of success by developing, promoting and deploying new ideas and technologies that both expand open access and go beyond it to further transform the way scientists communicate with each other and the public. PLOS has invested significant resources in the development of a new, flexible and robust enterprise-level publishing platform. The next CEO will guide the continued development of this platform and leverage it to achieve PLOS’ ambitious vision for the future of research communication. The CEO will have a strong record of successful executive leadership and a deep enthusiasm for the mission of PLOS. Candidates for the position will have excellent analytical, strategic planning and communication skills, will embrace the disruptive potential of technology, and will have a track record of innovation and driving change.
