ARL Academy: Careers in Academic & Research Libraries

Key Elements

Tuition Waiver—Each Fellow will be given a tuition waiver to cover tuition for three credit hours in a MLIS program at one of the partner library schools.

Fellowship—Each Fellow will complete a 240-hour Fellowship experience in an ARL library during the Spring semester. The Fellowship design will be a combination of the position description created by the ARL library and the learning goals established by Fellows and their Faculty Advisors. All Fellowships will be closely monitored by Faculty Advisors and on-site Mentors to bridge theory and practice. Fellows will be compensated for hours worked and travel and/or lodging costs will be funded by the program.

Preparation—The following steps are provided to assist Fellows with starting the process of selecting a site for fellowship in an ARL Library. ARL recommends that each Fellow begin the process at least three months prior to the desired start date.

  1. Fellows, in collaboration with their faculty advisor, should identify up to 3 ARL libraries for possible fellowships.
  2. Fellows should notify ARL, via email, of their 3 sites and provide a current CV that includes an objectives statement. A clearly articulated objectives statement will help prospective employers get a good sense of fit and create a mutually beneficial learning experience.
