Ellen Marks Bio

Ellen Marks is a faculty member in the Wayne State University Library and Information Science Program. Her academic interests cover management of information agencies, health information outreach/community informatics, public health informatics, and interdisciplinary research communication and sharing technologies.

From 1993 through April 2008, Ellen Marks was director of the Shiffman Medical Library, with leadership responsibilities within the Wayne State University Library System and for three hospitals of the Detroit Medical Center. Recent accomplishments included conceptual and operational planning and participation in fundraising for renovation and expansion of the Shiffman Medical Library resulting in the September 2007 groundbreaking for the Richard J. Masurek M. D. Education Commons in consort with the School of Medicine, the nation’s largest single campus medical college. In addition to its role as the university’s academic health sciences library, the Shiffman Library maintains active health information outreach programs focused on communities within Southeastern Michigan and a statewide health services database associated with the National Library of Medicine’s MedlinePlus. External funding to support these programs has been obtained from the National Library of Medicine, the Ryan White Care Act Title A/B, American Honda Foundation, and the City of Detroit Department of Health and Wellness.

Ellen Marks has been a co-investigator in funded research from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke for the NIH Office of Research Integrity. At both Wayne State University and in previous positions at the University of Cincinnati, she has been a co-investigator for the NLM’s Integrated Advanced Information Management Systems strategic planning and prototype development grants. She also teaches library administration and management for the Graduate Library and Information Science Program at Wayne State University. She holds a BA in English from the Ohio State University and an MS in library science from Case Western Reserve University.
