ARL executive director Elliott Shore has embarked on a “listening tour” of ARL member libraries. This is the second in a series of informal reports from his visits.
I continue to visit ARL member libraries to meet and talk with staff and directors. During the first week of February, I had the pleasure of visiting the five ARL libraries that are located in the Boston area: Boston College, Boston Public, Boston University, Harvard, and MIT. I was able to spend at least half a day at each institution, meeting with all five directors as well as AULs at each library.
The week of visits culminated in a reception for the senior staff of all five libraries hosted by Harvard on Thursday afternoon, February 7. Unfortunately the threat of two feet of snow that would be brought by winter storm Nemo the next day kept some staff and one director from attending the reception, but it was a good opportunity for most of us to connect as a group.
I have upcoming visits scheduled in Chicago; in Texas while I’m there for the spring CNI Membership Meeting; and in New York, Kansas, and Tennessee at the time of the spring ASERL Membership Meeting. Later in the spring, I’m working out details for visits to Ohio and to some of the Canadian libraries, initially focusing on Ontario. And I’m scheduling meetings with DC–area libraries.
