Diversity and Leadership Committee

Discussions will include updates on the status of fund-raising efforts for the ARL Initiative to Recruit a Diverse Workforce; progress on the development of a new directors’ institute; and final evaluations of the 2011-2012 Research Libraries Leadership Fellows (RLLF) program. The committee will be visited by Dr. Sandra Hirsh, Director of the School of Information and Library Science at San Jose State, who will discuss the “Catalyst” program, a residency program model that focuses on recruitment and development of new LIS professionals with technology competencies.

E-Research Working Group

Working Group guests include Kathleen Shearer, Executive Director of Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR), to talk about the new Joint ARL-CARL-COAR-LIBER Task Force on Librarians’ Competencies in Support of E-Research and Scholarly Communication; and Vivian Lewis, who will speak about her Mellon-funded research with Xuemao Wang and Jon Cawthorne on benchmarking skills and capacities to support digital scholarship. Rick Luce, co-chair of the SHARE Steering Group, will update the Working Group on progress on the SHARE initiative, and the remaining discussion time will be devoted to next steps in refining the e-research agenda.

The meeting will include discussions on the activities of the program and their strategic alignment, metrics and qualitative indicators regarding the value of special collections, next steps regarding the development of a facilities toolkit/inventory, and plans for training and related projects.

Regional Federal Depository Libraries Working Group

The Working Group will focus on new opportunities for the FDLP with a focus on identifying new measures to add flexibility to the management of collections and participation in the Program by regional depository libraries. In addition, there will be a discussion about the GPO request for comment on elimination of microfiche as a distribution mechanism and best means of advising GPO on the perspective of regionals.

Transforming Special Collections in the Digital Age Working Group

The agenda will include Working Group guest Nancy Maron of Ithaka S+R, lead researcher for the IMLS-funded cooperative agreement with ARL to produce success case studies of digitized special collections at a variety of types and sizes of institutions. The Working Group will also discuss next steps for the group’s prior work on mainstreaming and mission alignment, as well as measuring and demonstrating the value of special collections.

Advancing Scholarly Communication Steering Committee

Committee guests include Pamela Samuelson, Richard M. Sherman Distinguished Professor of Law, Berkeley Law School (via Skype) to talk about her work to advance the copyright perspectives of academic authors and Maryann Martone, Executive Director, Force 11, who will provide information on the activities of this new movement. Tyler Walters, Virginia Tech, and co-chair of the SHARE Steering Group, will update the committee on the SHARE initiative. A discussion on licensing issues and updates on program activities will round out the agenda.

Influencing Public Policies Steering Committee with Fair Use and Related Exemptions Working Group

The Steering Committee and the Fair Use and Related Exemptions Working Group will discuss several topics. First, there will be a review and discussion of a new copyright education proposal. The CCC is the only venue for copyright education with the demise of the Center for Intellectual Program at the University of Maryland University. A proposal will be available shortly and will serve as the basis for discussion. Secondly, ARL recently conducted a focus group on developing a positive educational tool in response to the CCC copyright ads in the Chronicle of Higher Education. Review and input on this approach is requested. Brandon Butler will join us for this agenda item. Additionally, with copyright reform discussions underway in the House, we will continue to discuss ARL and LCA’s work in these legislative conversations. Third, there will be an update and discussion of recent accessibility developments on the Hill, internationally and in federal agencies. Fourth, there will be an update and discussion of the ARL response to the White House Memorandum on “Increasing Access to the Results of Federally Funded Scientific Research.” ARL continues to collaborate with AAU and APLU on community responses to the Memorandum in addition to our ongoing work with SPARC. Fifth, activities concerning new privacy and surveillance legislation will be discussed. Finally, there will be an update on Canadian copyright and public policies initiatives.

Transforming Research Libraries Steering Committee

Guests include Nancy Fried Foster, Ithaka S+R, to talk with the Committee about using Participatory Design to address pressing research questions for our community, such as the library’s role in online learning and new pedagogy; and Sandra Hirsh, Professor and Director of the School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University, to talk about her work developing a model residency program for technology integration and preparing LIS students for the current marketplace. TRL’s two Working Groups – E-Research and Transforming Special Collections in the Digital Age – will provide updates to the committee, and lastly, the committee will be asked for input on a draft outline for an ARL white paper on the library workforce, prepared by a committee sub-group.

Emerging Trends in the Information Environment

Ingrid Parent led IFLA in developing a far-ranging Trends Report to help the world of libraries think about the future in the widest frame. ARL is engaging in a strategic thinking and design process that will create systems of action to shape the future of research libraries. This program will explore the emerging trends in our information environment and the ways in which research libraries might respond.

A New Ecology for the Information Environment

The Digital Public Library of America is a model for building a new ecosystem for sharing online resources. ARL is building new systems through its strategic thinking and design process and the development of SHARE. Dan Cohen will address the challenges and realities of creating new ecologies touching upon the social and political issues that organizations will face.
