The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has published the eighth profile in a series highlighting digital scholarship support at ARL member libraries. The latest installment in this series features the work of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign profile presents a brief history of the evolution of digital scholarship support at the university, focusing on three library units: the Scholarly Commons, the Media Commons, and the new Grainger Engineering Library Innovation, Discovery, Design, and Data (IDEA) Lab. Support for digital scholarship is a collaborative effort across the libraries, involving a range of staff and technology-equipped spaces.

This profile describes the current work of the Scholarly Commons, the Media Commons, and the IDEA Lab, including information about staffing, services, collaboration, funding, and outreach. The profile concludes with a discussion of how the library is looking to the future to best foster innovation in teaching and learning, as well as collaborative and entrepreneurial work by students with faculty and staff.

Three established projects are featured in the profile: Women in Print, which creates primary source, scholarly edition e-books of pre-Victorian women’s writings; Emblematica Online, a collaborative project to digitize two of the world’s largest collections of Renaissance emblem books at the University of Illinois and the Herzog August Bibliothek, Wolfenbüttel, Germany; and the Illinois Digital Newspaper Collections, which is digitizing historic newspapers to preserve them and make them available to researchers online.
