Giao Baker Reflects on ARL-CNI Fall Forum 2017

Giao Baker

This year’s recipient of the Julia C. Blixrud Scholarship, Giao Luong Baker, shares her impressions of the ARL-CNI Fall Forum 2017 in a blog post. The forum, sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), gathered some 170 academic and research library leaders in Washington, DC, on October 5 to consider “Libraries and the Research Enterprise.”

The daylong event focused on how research libraries’ staffing, resource allocation, and organization are (or are not) reflective of their parent institutions’ research agendas. The 2017 Julia C. Blixrud Memorial Lecturer, Wolfram Horstmann, explored what kind of transformational change is needed to close the gaps between libraries’ operations and research needs. Psychology professor Christopher Niemiec delivered an interactive presentation on motivation and self-determination theory that underscored the role of staff empowerment in these transformations. A series of lightning talks and a panel discussion explored various ways in which specific libraries are enacting transformation.
