Washington, DC—The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has published Managing Born-Digital Special Collections and Archival Materials, SPEC Kit 329, which explores the tools, workflow, and policies special collections and archives staff use to process, manage, and provide access to born-digital materials they collect. This SPEC Kit looks at which staff process and manage born-digital materials and how they acquire the skills they need for these activities. The publication also examines how libraries have responded to the challenges that managing born-digital materials present.

Washington, DC—The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) will host a forum, “Library Workforce for 21st-Century Research Libraries,” on October 11–12, 2012, in Washington, DC, immediately following the ARL Membership Meeting. The forum is open to all and is geared for research library directors, senior library staff, and organization development and human resources staff. This event will provide a balance of discussion between two sets of issues—the workforce of the future and the processes undertaken to create that workforce.

Washington, DC—The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Statistics and Assessment program and the Digital Library Federation, a program of the Council on Library and Information Resources, are pleased to offer an in-depth workshop focused on using XSLT (Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations) in digital library projects.

ARL is now accepting applications for the ARL Career Enhancement Program. Masters of library and information science (MLIS) students from racial and ethnic minority groups, who have successfully completed a minimum of 12 credit hours (or will complete 12 hours by the scheduled internship) from an ALA–accredited MLIS program, are encouraged to apply for this enriching program experience.

Washington, DC—The Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) is pleased to announce the selection of Courtney Loder, a PhD student in the Department of Informatics at the University of California at Irvine (UCI), as the 2012 recipient of the Paul Evan Peters Fellowship for graduate study in the information sciences or librarianship. The fellowship was established to honor the memory of CNI founding Executive Director Paul Evan Peters; it recognizes outstanding scholarship and intellectual rigor, a commitment to civic responsibility and democratic values, and imagination.

Washington, DC—The LibQUAL+® team is pleased to announce that there are a few spots available for the daylong workshop Working Effectively with LibQUAL+® on November 1, 2012, following the Library Assessment Conference in Charlottesville, Virginia. Led by Raynna Bowlby and Martha Kyrillidou (Association of Research Libraries), this workshop targets recent LibQUAL+® participants, exposing attendees to the variety of ways one can approach and interpret LibQUAL+® data, and focuses on specific institutional results and analysis.

Washington, DC—The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has published the ARL Annual Salary Survey 2011–2012, which analyzes salary data for all professional staff working in the 126 ARL member libraries during FY 2011–2012. Data are reported for 9,910 professional staff in the 115 university ARL libraries and for 4,046 professional staff in the 11 non-university ARL libraries. Data for university library staff are usually reported in three distinct groups: general library systems, health sciences libraries, and law libraries.
