CNI has published a podcast of a presentation by Roberta Shaffer, associate librarian for library services at the Library of Congress (LC), discussing LC’s new Bibliographic Framework Initiative (BIBFRAME) at the CNI Membership Meeting in San Antonio, Texas, this April. BIBFRAME is intended to develop a new communications vehicle for bibliographic data to better accommodate future needs. A major focus of the initiative will be to determine a transition path for the MARC 21 exchange format in order to reap the benefits of newer technology while preserving a robust data exchange that has supported resource sharing and cataloging cost savings in recent decades. Shaffer’s presentation describes the BIBFRAME steps taken to date and the expectations for further development.
