On August 2, the University of Virginia (UVa) Library released an online collection of historic news footage broadcast by Roanoke’s WSLS-TV from 1951 to 1971. According to an article by Lorenzo Perez in UVA Today, the archive is the result of a five-year initiative “to digitally preserve what is believed to be the only surviving TV news archive of original film clips from Virginia’s civil rights era.” The first 3,600 news clips of the WSLS-TV News Film Collection are publicly available through the library’s online catalog; the remaining 9,400 clips and 18,000 pages of anchor scripts are expected to be uploaded by the end of the year. The collection is searchable by keyword, subject, and date. For more details, see the August 2 UVA Today article “U.Va. Library Launches Online Archive of Historical TV News Footage.”
