The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) has named Chuck Humphrey the initial director of the Portage research data management network for a two-year term beginning September 8, 2015. Humphrey is also research data management services coordinator for the University of Alberta Libraries, a position he has held since 1992. He has worked on numerous regional, national, and international initiatives to increase access to data for teaching and research purposes.

Portage aims to coordinate and expand existing library-based expertise, services, and infrastructure so that Canadian researchers will have access to the support necessary for research data management. As director of Portage, Humphrey will further define the parameters, scope, and governance of the network; seek the resources to support it; and oversee the first stages of development. One of the early goals is to create a foundation of expertise to sustain the network in years to come.

For more information about Humphrey and his appointment, see the July 6 CARL news release, “Chuck Humphrey Named initial Director of Portage.”
