ARL Announces 2007–08 Board of Directors

Washington DC—Marianne I. Gaunt, University Librarian, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, began a one-year term as President of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) on October 11, 2007, during the ARL Membership Meeting held in Washington DC. She succeeds Sherrie Schmidt, University Librarian, Arizona State University. Schmidt continues to serve as a member of the ARL Board of Directors and Executive Committee as Past President. Also on October 11, the membership ratified the Board of Directors election of Thomas C. Leonard as ARL Vice President/President-Elect. Leonard is the Kenneth and Dorothy Hill University Librarian and a Professor in the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley.

Three new Board members were elected by the membership to serve three-year terms: Winston Tabb, Sheridan Director and Dean of University Libraries, Johns Hopkins University; Karin A. Trainer, University Librarian, Princeton University; and Paul Wiens, University Librarian, Queen’s University.

Continuing members of the Board are: Barbara I. Dewey, Dean of Libraries, University of Tennessee; Brinley Franklin, Vice Provost, University Libraries, University of Connecticut; Charles B. Lowry, Dean of Libraries, University of Maryland, College Park; Carol A. Mandel, Dean of the Division of Libraries, New York University; Dana C. Rooks, Dean of Libraries, Elizabeth D. Rockwell Chair, University of Houston; and Jennifer A. Younger, Edward H. Arnold Director of University Libraries, University of Notre Dame.

The ARL Board is the governing body of the Association and represents the interest of ARL member libraries in directing the business of the Association, including establishing operating policies, budgets, and fiscal control; modifying the ARL mission and objectives; and representing ARL to the community.

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) is a nonprofit organization of 123 research libraries in North America. Its mission is to influence the changing environment of scholarly communication and the public policies that affect research libraries and the diverse communities they serve. ARL pursues this mission by advancing the goals of its member research libraries, providing leadership in public and information policy to the scholarly and higher education communities, fostering the exchange of ideas and expertise, and shaping a future environment that leverages its interests with those of allied organizations.
