UC Berkeley University Librarian Thomas C. Leonard Elected Vice President/President-Elect of Association of Research Libraries

Washington DC—On October 11, 2007, the membership of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) ratified the ARL Board of Directors election of Thomas C. Leonard as ARL Vice President/President-Elect. Leonard is the Kenneth and Dorothy Hill University Librarian and a Professor in the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley.

Since being named University Librarian seven years ago, Leonard has been directly involved in the activities of ARL through its committees, where he worked with other ARL research library directors to address issues related to research library collections and their preservation and where he set Association direction and priorities in the broad area of scholarly communication.

Leonard also has a record in ARL governance, serving on a Task Force on Future Financial Strategies. He was elected to the ARL Board of Directors in 2004. Leonard will continue to serve on the Board until October 2010.

The current ARL President, Marianne I. Gaunt, University Librarian, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, will present the presidential gavel to Leonard at the October 2008 ARL Membership Meeting in Washington DC. Leonard will serve as ARL President until October 2009, and will serve as Past President until October 2010.

The ARL Board is the governing body of the Association and represents the interest of ARL member libraries in directing the business of the Association, including establishing operating policies, budgets, and fiscal control; modifying the ARL mission and objectives; and representing ARL to the community.

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) is a nonprofit organization of 123 research libraries in North America. Its mission is to influence the changing environment of scholarly communication and the public policies that affect research libraries and the diverse communities they serve. ARL pursues this mission by advancing the goals of its member research libraries, providing leadership in public and information policy to the scholarly and higher education communities, fostering the exchange of ideas and expertise, and shaping a future environment that leverages its interests with those of allied organizations.
