LibQUAL+® and Beyond: Using Results Effectively

York UK, June 23, 2008

Washington DC—This all-day workshop is designed for LibQUAL+® participants and other libraries interested in better understanding how they can use their assessment results effectively, identify actionable items, and incorporate a cycle of improvement into the larger library assessment framework within their institution.

The administration of a user survey is a significant investment for any library and it raises expectations among users and staff. How will you act upon the results, once received? The morning session will review ways to work with user survey results, present the results effectively to different stakeholders, utilize data to target areas for improvement, and develop a process of continuous assessment. This session will be led by Stephen Town, Director of the University Library & Archives, University of York; Darien Rossiter, Acting Director of Knowledge Services, Defence College of Management and Technology Library, Cranfield University; and Martha Kyrillidou, Director of Statistics and Service Quality Programs, Association of Research Libraries (ARL).

The afternoon agenda will focus on the Balanced Scorecard and ARL’s Effective, Sustainable, and Practical Assessment service (http://www.arl.org/stats/initiatives/esp/), which assists libraries in developing assessment programs that demonstrate the libraries’ contributions to teaching, learning, and research. Jim Self, Director of Management Information Services, University of Virginia (UVa) Library, will describe the UVa Library’s experiences with the Balanced Scorecard: the development process, implementation, overall experience, and how they used the results. Steve Hiller, Director of Assessment and Planning, University of Washington Libraries, will discuss the Effective, Sustainable, and Practical Assessment service that he and Jim Self bring to life as ARL Visiting Program Officers. During the past four years, Hiller and Self have conducted over 30 assessment consultations at academic libraries in North America, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Participants in this session will explore the relationship between performance measurement and user assessment, learn about alternative assessment methods, and explore how they can start thinking about assessment at their own institutions.

LibQUAL+® is a suite of services that libraries use to solicit, track, understand, and act upon users’ opinions of service quality. These services are offered to the library community by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). The program’s centerpiece is a rigorously tested Web-based survey bundled with training that helps libraries assess and improve library services, change organizational culture, and market the library. LibQUAL+® is on the Web at http://www.libqual.org/.

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) is a nonprofit organization of 123 research libraries in North America. Its mission is to influence the changing environment of scholarly communication and the public policies that affect research libraries and the diverse communities they serve. ARL pursues this mission by advancing the goals of its member research libraries, providing leadership in public and information policy to the scholarly and higher education communities, fostering the exchange of ideas and expertise, and shaping a future environment that leverages its interests with those of allied organizations.
