Library Copyright Alliance Releases User Guide to Marrakesh Treaty for Blind

image © Dominique ArchambaultOn June 27, a Diplomatic Conference of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) held in Marrakesh, Morocco, adopted the Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired, or Otherwise Print Disabled. The Library Copyright Alliance has issued a new “User Guide to the Marrakesh Treaty” (PDF) by Jonathan Band. Read a condensed version of the user guide on the ARL Policy Notes blog.

ARL Statistics® 2011–2012 Data Now Available in Analytics

ARL has released the 2011–2012 ARL Statistics dataset through ARL Statistics Analytics, a subscription-based service for nonmember libraries, vendors, commercial parties, and others interested in accessing the final, verified ARL Statistics data through an interactive interface. (ARL member institutions enjoy free access to the analytics as a benefit of membership.) ARL Statistics is a series of annual data-collection activities that describe the collections, expenditures, staffing, and service activities for the member libraries of the Association of Research Libraries.

McMaster Appoints Vivian Lewis University Librarian

Vivian Lewis has been named university librarian for McMaster University, announced the university on August 1. Lewis served as acting university librarian from May 2012, when Jeffrey Trzeciak stepped down to serve as university librarian at Washington University in St. Louis. Research Data Management Services, SPEC Kit 334, Published by ARL

ARL has published Research Data Management Services, SPEC Kit 334, which surveys ARL member libraries on their activities related to access, management, and archiving of research data at their institutions. The survey explores the organization of research data management services (including a few questions on broader data support services), how they are staffed and funded, and what services they offer and to whom, among other questions.

You do not need to work at an ARL library to register for the courses at this site—they are open to all librarians and archivists.

ARL Selects Leadership Fellows for 2013–2015

This executive leadership program meets the increasing demands for succession planning for research libraries with a new approach to preparing the next generation of deans and directors. Library directors are seeking a cohort of well-trained and sophisticated candidates who possess the necessary experience and perspective to succeed in premier leadership positions in large, complex institutions. The ARL Leadership Fellows program provides such a cohort.

U Nebraska–Lincoln Appoints Nancy Busch Dean of Libraries

Nancy Busch has been named dean of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) Libraries effective July 19, 2013, pending Board of Regents approval. Busch served as interim dean of libraries from August 2012, when Joan Giesecke stepped down to take a new role coordinating the university's preparation for a 2016 re-accreditation. U Hawai‘i at Mānoa Appoints Irene Herold University Librarian

Irene Herold has been named university librarian at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, effective August 1, 2013. Herold was previously the dean of Mason Library at Keene State College in New Hampshire. Gregg Geary has served as interim university librarian at University of Hawai‘i since Paula Mochida retired as interim on December 31, 2011. Davita Vance-Cooks Confirmed as Public Printer of the US

davita-vance-cooksDavita Vance-Cooks, photo courtesy GPOThe US Government Printing Office (GPO) announced today that the US Senate unanimously confirmed Davita Vance-Cooks as Public Printer of the United States. Vance-Cooks has served as the Acting Public Printer since January 3, 2012. She is the first African American and the first woman to be nominated and confirmed for the leadership of the GPO, which was established in 1861. With the Senate’s approval, Vance-Cooks becomes the 27th Public Printer of the United States.
