NYPL Opens Photo Booths to Document, Share Library Experiences

image © NYPLThe New York Public Library (NYPL) has installed photo booths in the Mid-Manhattan Library and the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building for visitors to document and share how they use the library. Visitors are encouraged to share their photo booth images on Instagram with the tags #NYPL and #NYPLphotobooth. NCSU Shares Open-Source Software for Crowdsourcing Photos

My #HuntLibrary websiteNorth Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries are making available a free, open-source solution—called lentil—that enables libraries and other organizations to build, moderate, administer, and display collections of photographs posted to Instagram. The software was inspired by the opening of the James B. Hunt Jr. Library in January 2013. The NCSU Libraries wanted to find a way for NC State students, researchers, and community members to share their reactions to the new building, a “library of the future” designed around collaborative spaces and visually inspiring work areas. The libraries created the My #HuntLibrary website, where the lentil software collects and displays Instagram photos tagged #HuntLibrary.

The program will explore the opportunities and collaborations in responding to the White House memorandum on “Increasing Access to the Results of Federally Funded Research.” The forum will open with a keynote address by Richard McCarty, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, Vanderbilt University.

APTrust Appoints Suzanne Thorin Program Director

Suzanne Thorin, image © APTrustSuzanne Thorin has been named the first program director for Academic Preservation Trust (APTrust), effective August 19, 2013. Thorin was previously dean of libraries and university librarian at Syracuse University. APTrust—a consortium of 11 US research universities—is committed to the creation and management of a preservation repository that will aggregate academic and research content from many institutions. U Washington Names Betsy Wilson Vice Provost for Digital Initiatives

Betsy Wilson, image © U WashingtonLizabeth (Betsy) Wilson, dean of university libraries at University of Washington (UW), has been appointed to the additional role of vice provost for digital initiatives, effective August 2013. This is one of several new appointments at UW designed to bring further expertise into the provost’s office. U Miami Appoints Charles Eckman Dean of Libraries

Charles D. Eckman, image © U MiamiCharles D. Eckman has been named dean of libraries at University of Miami (UM), effective December 1, 2013. Eckman is currently dean of library services and university librarian at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada. At UM he will succeed William D. Walker, who served as dean of libraries from 2003 through May of this year when he stepped down to rejoin the faculty.
