Leading a Strategic Assessment Program in a Research Library: ARL to Offer Seminar for New Assessment Professionals

two people sitting at a table in a libraryRegistration is now open for “Leading a Strategic Assessment Program in a Research Library: An ARL Seminar for Recently Appointed Assessment Professionals,” to be held in Washington, DC, May 14–15, 2015. This two-day, in-person event is designed for librarians and coordinators who are new to the roles and responsibilities of assessment. The seminar will be supplemented with pre- and post-workshop webcasts (dates to be determined) and independent learning activities, plus connection with a network of experienced colleagues who will provide ongoing support.

Jordan Eschler and Olivia Dorsey Receive Paul Evan Peters Fellowships

olivia-dorsey-and-jordan-eschlerOlivia Dorsey, Jordan Eschler (left to right)The Coalition for Networked Information (CNI)—sponsored by ARL and EDUCAUSE—has announced the selection of doctoral student Jordan Eschler and master’s student Olivia Dorsey as the 2014 recipients of the Paul Evan Peters Fellowship for graduate study in library and information sciences. The fellowship was established to honor the memory of CNI founding executive director Paul Evan Peters; it recognizes outstanding scholarship and intellectual rigor, a commitment to civic responsibility and democratic values, and imagination. This is the first time two fellowships are being awarded in one year.

Earnstein Dukes Named Interim Dean of Libraries at Texas Tech

Texas Tech University has appointed Earnstein Dukes as interim dean of libraries, effective September 1, 2014. Dukes has served as associate dean of libraries at Texas Tech since 2003. She is serving as interim dean while a search is conducted to replace Donald Dyal, who retired on August 29, after 13 years as dean of libraries. Coalition Urges Congress to Ensure Fourth Amendment Protection for Digital Communication

Constitution Day ad re ECPA View/download PDF On Constitution Day, September 17, 2014, ARL joined a coalition of businesses and civil rights, privacy, and public interest organizations in running an advertisement in Roll Call urging Congressional leaders to bring two bipartisan bills, S. 607 and H.R. 1852, to the floor. These bills would update the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) and ensure that the warrant standard of the Fourth Amendment applies to private digital communication and information just as it applies to physical property. As an increasing amount of information is stored in cloud-based services and more communication takes place online, ensuring that the Fourth Amendment extends to the digital environment is critical. This coalition also sent letters to the leadership of the US House of Representatives and the US Senate urging passage of the ECPA legislation.

Master of library and information science (MLIS) students from racial and ethnic minority groups, who have successfully completed a minimum of 12 credit hours (or will complete 12 hours by the scheduled internship) in an American Library Association (ALA)–accredited program, are encouraged to apply for this enriching experience.

The ARL Career Enhancement Program, funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and ARL member libraries, provides each fellow a rewarding compensation package with a potential value in excess of $10,000 per person.
