Higher Education, Library Groups Release Net Neutrality Principles

The groups believe network neutrality protections are essential to protecting freedom of speech, educational achievement, and economic growth.

Call for Proposals for SPEC Survey Topics 2015—Deadline Approaching

SPEC logoSPECARL is seeking proposals for 2015 SPEC survey topics by Friday, July 18, 2014. For 40 years ARL has gathered and disseminated data through the SPEC survey program to assist libraries in the continuous improvement of their management systems. Each year, ARL works with librarians in the US and Canada to develop surveys of the ARL membership on strategic topics related to research library policies and practices. (Survey authors do not need to work at an ARL member library, but only ARL libraries are surveyed.)

ARL Annual Salary Survey 2013–2014 Reports Data on 13,900 Staff in ARL Libraries

arl-annual-salary-survey-2013-2014-coverARL Annual Salary Survey 2013–2014The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has published the ARL Annual Salary Survey 2013–2014, which analyzes salary data for all professional staff working in the 125 ARL member libraries during 2013–2014. Data are reported for 10,168 professional staff in the 115 university ARL libraries and for 3,791 professional staff in the 10 nonuniversity ARL libraries. In the Salary Survey, data for university library staff are usually reported in three distinct groups: general library systems, health sciences libraries, and law libraries.

Virginia Tech Open Access Fund Helps VT Students and Faculty Publish Research

GuntherIn August 2012, the Virginia Tech (VT) University Libraries, in partnership with VT’s Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost and the Office of the Vice President for Research, began subsidizing article-processing fees for Virginia Tech authors publishing in open access journals. Today, the Open Access Subvention Fund continues to help faculty and students publish and disseminate research.

ARL/DLF Forum Fellowships for Underrepresented Groups—Apply by July 14

The fellowships will provide up to $1,250 each, to be applied towards travel, board, and lodging expenses associated with attending a DLF Forum. Additionally, the fellows will each receive a complimentary full registration to the forum ($475). Fellowship recipients will be required to write a blog post about their experience subsequent to the forum; this blog post will be published by DLF.

The online survey collects information about: (a) library staff perceptions of the organization’s commitment to the principles of diversity, (b) staff perceptions of organizational policies and procedures, and (c) staff attitudes. We are pleased to publish the inaugural issue of the SHARE Update. As you may know, SHARE (SHared Access Research Ecosystem) is a higher education and research community initiative to ensure the preservation of, access to, and reuse of research outputs. The monthly e-newsletter is designed to provide stakeholders and other interested individuals with updates on our progress. The newsletter is also designed to make it easier for you to engage your own community—librarians, campus administrators, faculty, and others—to help them get a better sense of how SHARE can add structure and clarity to the research ecosystem.

The first issue of the SHARE Update includes an introduction by ARL executive director Elliott Shore, a roundup of what’s new and what’s next, and pointers to a few useful resources for learning more about SHARE.

Copyright MOOC To Be Offered by Duke, Emory, and UNC Chapel Hill

The course aims to begin to demystify the law and help educators and librarians do their jobs more effectively. The first offering of the MOOC will run July 21–August 18, 2014. The instructors are Kevin Smith of Duke University, Lisa Macklin of Emory University, and Anne Gilliland of the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill.
