Brown University Associate University Librarian for Administrative Services The Brown University Library seeks a forward-looking, dynamic leader for the newly-created position of Associate University Librarian for Administrative Services. The successful candidate for this role will be a proven leader with a record of close attention to detail who can effectively coordinate the library’s administrative support services, including human resources, budget and financial management, and facilities. The position reports directly to the University Librarian and is part of the library’s senior management team. Actively engaged with the University Librarian and other senior administrators, the AUL for Administrative Services ensures the effective integration and coordination of high-quality library administrative services. S/he is responsible for managing a team of administrative service professionals and support staff and for aligning library policies and administrative operations with library goals and University services. Particular areas of emphasis include enhancement of staff development and organizational performance, vigilance to space utilization and maintenance, and evaluation and analysis of budgetary needs and expenditures across the organization. As a member of the library’s senior administrative team, the new AUL collaborates with other library leaders at Brown on long-range strategic planning, assessment of outcomes, policy formulation, program development, and resource allocation that supports services and staff. The incumbent represents the library in matters relating to administrative services at the campus, local, regional, and national levels, while keeping abreast of ongoing issues and trends. The Brown University Library encompasses six facilities, including one 24/5 student study space and one off-site, high-density storage building. The library’s holdings include over 4.6 million total volumes, 13,000 linear feet of manuscript materials, over 88,000 print and electronic journal subscriptions, several hundred thousand e-books, and approximately 80,000 digital objects. The library maintains a very active Center for Digital Scholarship and houses a new state-of-the-art digital scholarship laboratory. The library’s overall expenditures in FY 2012 were just over $20 million. The library’s dedicated staff of 155 FTE (including 65 bargaining unit support staff) provide services to a campus population of 800 faculty, 2,500 graduate and medical students, and 6,000 undergraduate students. Qualifications: •A graduate degree in a relevant field such as library science, finance, business/management or human resources management, with preference given to applicants with an MLS. •Minimum of five years of progressively responsible management experience in libraries, human resources, budget and/or facilities. •Demonstrated understanding of best practices and success in managing human resources, budget, and/or facilities units. •Preference given to applicants with recent experience and knowledge of issues and trends in administrative services within academic libraries. •Substantive record of initiative in effective use of emerging technologies, relevant database and software packages, and/or appropriate methodologies in delivering administrative services. •Ability to initiate and manage change and to work within a collegial framework. •Strong commitment to fostering growth and development of others. •High comfort level working in a diverse environment. •Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with experience in working collaboratively with others. •Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. •Proficient project management skills.
