Duties & Responsibilities: The Librarian for Western Europe has primary responsibility for collection development and related services within Widener Library for all materials originating in Western Europe (excluding the British Isles and Iberia), Hungary, Romania, and Albania.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Develops and manage the Library's Western European collections in the humanities and social sciences; selects library materials; consults on preservation issues; and analyzes and evaluates collections in terms of coverage, format, and distribution among Harvard's libraries.
* Oversees approval plans; manages the unit's budget; coordinates priorities and tasks with colleagues in Information & Technical Services; and consults with library units throughout the Harvard Library and beyond.
* Communicates with academic departments, faculty, and other users; assists users with specialized reference and through other means; may participate in teaching and outreach programs as other duties permit; may assume liaison responsibilities to academic departments or programs.
* Continuously engages with remote resources and with cooperative initiatives for collection development and access and works in close collaboration with other bibliographers in the Collection Development Department, also coordinating the acquisition of Western European resources with the Librarian for Hellenic Studies and Coordinator for the Classics; the Librarian for Latin America, Spain, and Portugal; the Librarian for Sub-Saharan Africa; and other Area and Subject bibliographers.
* Establishes close working relationships with representatives of the book trade and the overall community of information providers.
* Supervises two Bibliographic Specialists for Western Europe.
Basic Qualifications:
* MLS and an advanced degree in the humanities or social sciences.
* Demonstrated ability in Collection Development in a research library.
* Deep knowledge of research trends and the scholarly process.
* Expertise in the information marketplace and the book trade in Western Europe, including non-print and electronic resources.
* Excellent knowledge of at least two Western European languages, preferably including German, French, or Italian, is required; plus strong reading knowledge of a third.
* Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, Access) and Aleph system.
* Experience with on-line integrated library catalogs, basic desktop and Internet applications required.
Additional Qualifications:
* Ph.D., or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience, preferred.
* Reading knowledge of additional Western European languages is desirable.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work as part of a team.
* Experience with electronic databases highly desirable.
* Flexibility and versatility required.
* Involvement in professional and scholarly organizations expected.
