Description

The University of Chicago Library invites applicants for the position of Supervisor, Continuing Resources Orders & Cataloging. The supervisor is responsible for the management of continuing resources orders; including supervising all Orders work processes and a staff consisting of four full-time staff and two part-time students. Works closely with the Head of Continuing Resources Orders & Cataloging in planning the distribution of work among staff, based on the nature of the incoming work and priorities to be met. The Supervisor is responsible for the training of staff engaged in Orders work processes. In addition, the Supervisor takes a collaborative role in performing routine catalog maintenance of continuing resources in all formats, and in resolving complex serial related problems. In the absence of the Head of the Unit, is capable of overseeing the processes of the entire Unit. Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and significant related library experience; previous supervisory experience, including hiring, training, evaluating, and directing work flows; previous experience working MARC bibliographic, authority, and holdings formats; demonstrated sound judgment and effective problem solving and decision making skills; previous experience working with continuing resources and demonstrated ability to solve a wide range of complex serial related problems; excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage complex tasks and projects; basic reading knowledge of two or more (non-English) Western European languages, preferably Romance or Germanic; working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, and database software; ability to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in written documents; ability to direct and instruct others in both new and established routines and procedures; excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with clarity, tact and courtesy with Library staff, vendors and others; ability to multitask and handle frequent interruptions; ability to work independently, sustain close attention to detail over long stretches of time, interpret and explain complex instructions, recognize and act in accordance with departmental priorities and exercise discretion in the execution of all duties; flexibility and adaptability in managing tasks to meet changes in procedures, processes, and technology required. Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in a library ordering unit; knowledge of Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2) with strong emphasis on their applications to continuing resources; basic knowledge of RDA: Resource Description and Access, as they apply to continuing resources; basic knowledge of Web Express preferred.
