Description

Texas A&M University Libraries seeks a forward-thinking, collaborative and energetic leader with a keen sense of the evolving role of research libraries in the digital age. The successful candidate will create and communicate a vision, set priorities, and develop strategies to assess and improve the access, management and preservation of information resources and the supporting infrastructure. The Associate Dean will join a newly forming Library leadership team. Within the next 18 months, the Libraries will execute searches to hire three (of four total) persons at the level of associate dean/director. These individuals will work with an experienced dean who joined the A&M libraries on July 1, 2012. Within the larger context of a campus that continues to grow in enrollment, graduate programs, research awards and endowment, the position presents exceptional opportunities for leadership with impact at the local, national and international levels. The position has administrative responsibility for the following units and services: • Cataloging • Collection Development and Acquisitions • Document Delivery • Preservation • Scholarly Communications • Shelving The materials budget is currently $14 million and the number of faculty/staff position in the above units total approximately 90 FTE. This is a faculty position and as a senior leadership position, the successful candidate will have a sufficient and established record in librarianship, scholarship and service to merit appointment at the rank of associate professor with tenure; preferred candidates will exhibit a record to affirm appointment at the rank of professor. Required Qualifications: • American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master's Degree (or equivalent) • Record of achievement sufficient for appointment as an associate professor with tenure • Minimum of 5 years of management and supervisory experience in progressively responsible positions in an academic research library • Demonstrated innovative leadership in organizing resources (human, technical and financial) to create an efficient, flexible and nimble organization • Demonstrated success in managing one or more of the areas of responsibility listed above • Experience anticipating the dynamic needs of stakeholders and adjusting in response to changing priorities • Knowledge of traditional and digital information lifecycles and relevant best practices • Knowledge of current and emergent preservation activities and best practices • Demonstrated deep understanding of scholarly communication issues, including research data stewardship, and the ability to engage the campus in working for change in scholarly communication • Experience managing the business, human, financial and technical requirements of change • Experience assessing and using results to improve services, collections and workflows • Experience in developing, communicating, and executing long- and short-range strategic planning goals • Evidence of commitment to diversity; ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse population • Demonstrated excellence in communicating (oral/written) with multiple layer groups (includes internal customers, external customers, peers, direct reports, across functions, and within the function) • Proven experience mentoring/advising library faculty in career development and planning Preferred Qualifications: • National or international reputation in librarianship • Ten years of substantive management and supervisory experience in progressively responsible positions in an academic research library • Record of achievement sufficient for appointment as a full professor with tenure • Record of success and involvement with scholarly communication programs • Experience with preservation strategies and programs • Record of significant external grant activity Environment: Founded in 1876, Texas A&M University, the sixth largest university in the nation, has an enrollment with close to 55,000 students and 2,800 instructional faculty members. Texas A&M University Libraries is a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and is the University's principal research and information center, providing 4.5 million volumes, 5.6 million microforms, 123,000 print and electronic serial titles, more than 1 million electronic books, and 1,400 databases. In the 2011 ARL rankings, the University Libraries was 24th in the Investment Index. Also in 2011 the University Libraries ranked 13th in materials expenditures ($18 million) and 5th in serials expenditures ($14 million). There is a total budgeted staff of 262, including 84 librarians with faculty status. Benefits & Salary: Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
