Program Session IV: ARL Library Showcases

Six ARL member libraries were showcased in simultaneous sessions focusing on cutting edge activities being led by the libraries. Representatives of the libraries offered demonstrations, comments, and opportunity for discussion. The six showcases are summarized below.

University of Iowa Information Arcade

Anita Lowry, Head, Information Arcade

Iowa Information Arcade session will present a multimedia overview of the history, current operations, and future plans of the Arcade, an electronic information and teaching facility located in the Main Library and in operation for nearly two years. The presentation will focus on two areas: Blueprint for collaboration on campus; and Beyond bibliographies: imaging and implementing the shift from information retrieval to information retrieval, manipulation, and analysis.

North Carolina State University Mosaic, World Wide Web, and Electronic Journals

Moasic and Mr. Serials: publishing, indexing, delivering, and archiving electronic publications automatically. E-journals online will be shown via Mosaic and WWW. NCSU has developed special indexing capabilities which will be demonstrated. The university library also supports two refereed electronic journals and the relationship will be described.

Rice University Library Electronic Studio

A demonstration of the Electronic Studio project, a multimedia educational activity developed jointly by the library, computing center, and faculty. Rice uses Virtual Notebook systems, Mosaic, WWW, and Gopher in its products and will also show the Rice CWIS, RiceInfo.

University of Southern Illinois Library Electronic Team Building

The CIRCA/2001 Team was established by the SIU libraries about two years ago and includes staff from the Library, Information Technology, Broadcasting, the Law Library, the Colleges of Science, Engineering, and Business, the University Press, and a growing number of participants. The team has worked together to catapult SIU into a technology leadership and service position. The focus is on the organizational approach that the Team represents. The demo will feature a video about the effort.

University of Texas Library Electronic Information Program

This presentation will feature the Electronic Information Training Program. The Library has provided instructional programs in over 80 topical areas to over 7,000 persons in the past a year and a half with the possibility of providing instructional programs on a state-wide basis.

Wayne State University Library: Being Part of the Community: DALNET

Louise Bugg, Interim Associate Dean

This presentation will focus on the university library as part of the urban community, Detroit Area Library Network (DALNET), administered by Wayne State University. DALNET Online System provides state of the art library management, database access, and collection sharing systems. With 560,000 registered users, it may be the largest self-funded program in the country. It is an example of how a research library can participate aggressively in the educational programs and the economic development of the region.
