Background
Following on ARL's endorsement of the statement "Urgent Action Needed to Preserve Scholarly Electronic Journals," the ARL Scholarly Communication Steering Committee is offering an opportunity to review a forthcoming survey of the preservation landscape of scholarly e-journals with its lead author, Anne Kenney, Associate University Librarian, Instruction, Research, and Information Services, Cornell University Library.
The study's focus is the "who, what, when, where, why, and how?" of significant preservation programs operated by not-for-profit organizations in the domain of peer-reviewed journal literature published in digital form. A panel presentation during the October 2005 ARL Membership Meeting discussed the preservation approaches of three different projects: Portico, LOCKSS, and the Dutch National Library?s E-Depot program. The CLIR survey will describe 10 initiatives from around the globe that acknowledge preservation responsibility for e-journal archiving. The final report will also identify other promising efforts in planning or pilot stages. By looking closely at the currently active significant projects, the study will provide a valuable picture of the current state of preservation programs, their coverage, and gaps.
Discussion Topic
The briefing session will include an overview of the survey and its initial findings followed by ample time for audience discussion.
