In September 1997, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Association of American University Presses, and the Association of Research Libraries convened a conference of university faculty, administrators, publishers, and librarians to examine the costs of publishing monographs and explore other, emerging frameworks for scholarly research and communication. The papers—some expanded—of this successful conference are now available in print. Published online at http://www.arl.org/resources/pubs/specscholmono/.
