AUL for IT

The Assistant University Librarian (AUL) will ensure robust systems support for established services, for nascent institutional repository and library publishing activities, and for new services appropriate to a library serving an academic research university with a comprehensive health sciences center. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to fill several vacant positions and to reorganize, lead, and coordinate the work of the staff of the Library Systems Department. The AUL will serve as a vital link with institutional partners such as the Academic Computing and Communications Center (ACCC), and with colleagues in the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) and the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI).

The AUL for Information Technology reports directly to the University Librarian, and is a member of the senior management team. The successful candidate will have the ability to perceive IT trends, envision library applications, and communicate this vision to senior management and to library staff at all levels. The AUL must have management skills that will support and advance the strengths of Systems Department staff. Priorities will be driven by the Library's strategic intent to provide seamless access to as much of its collection as legally possible. The Library will supply interactive instruction and customized client-based services as it provides digital content and knowledge management for the campus.

The UIC Library is an integral partner in support of education, research, and clinical practice at UIC and its regional health sciences programs in northern and central Illinois. The faculty of the UIC Library is known for its excellence in research, innovation, and professional leadership.

Library Systems has a history of collaborative innovation with product vendors early in their development cycles to help shape products that meet user and staff needs. The Library looks to employ a combination of established IT products, new products with a promising future, and its own creativity to take advantage of systems-related opportunities identified in its recent strategic plan. Library Systems also secures and supports public and staff workstations, maintains printing services, manages servers and supports Web applications, and answers questions from users and staff.

UIC is a leading urban public research university, providing an unusually diverse student population with access to world-class academic study. It offers an exciting work environment near the center of one of the country's great cities. Its Great Cities initiative fosters outreach to local communities. A new capital campaign is expected to include several goals specific to the Library that will include systems components.

Responsibilities within the Library:

  • Provide leadership, direction, and innovative long-range planning in support of library information technology and digital preservation.

  • Participate in administration and policy development on a library-wide basis.

Responsibilities outside the Library:

  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with the ACCC.

  • Participate in campus-wide discussions of knowledge management and data repository systems.

  • Represent the library through participation in local, regional, and national cooperative, outreach, and professional activities.

Minimum Education and Work Experience:

  • Advanced degree in library science or a related field.

  • Evidence of success as a manager, leader, and mentor in a library systems environment.

  • Strong commitment to communication and public services.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the trends and issues in academic libraries and the information technologies that support them.

  • Demonstrated history of professional innovation.

  • Professional commitment to librarianship and evidence of ability to meet university standards in clinical research, publication, and professional service.

Scholarly Communication Librarian

The University Library seeks a dynamic and energetic librarian to head its scholarly communication program. As one of its strategic goals, the Library is committed to leading a campus-wide effort to promote new forms of scholarly communication. The librarian will be responsible for developing initiatives to help the Library achieve its goal, promoting awareness of the issues and generating change in the scholarly publishing practices of the UIC faculty and graduate students. The Scholarly Communication Librarian reports to the University Librarian.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with other UIC librarians to develop strategies to raise the awareness of faculty, administrators, and students to the issues in the current system of scholarly publishing and options for creating change;
  • Chair the UIC Library Scholarly Communication Committee;
  • Provide training and tools for library faculty and staff to use in working with campus faculty;
  • Develop educational and outreach programs to encourage faculty participation in strategies that support open access and facilitate more cost effective scholarly communication;
  • Work with Collection Development on memberships that discount authors’ fees and other relevant scholarly communication issues;
  • Advise campus faculty on retention of author’s rights and other copyright issues;
  • Expand and maintain the scholarly communication website;
  • Monitor national and international developments in this arena and respond in a timely manner, cooperating with departments outside the library as needed, for example, staff in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research;
  • Participate in national conferences, discussions, and meetings on these issues;
  • Help develop the Library’s institutional repository and online journal systems, working in collaboration with systems personnel in the Library and ACCC;
  • Meet with faculty to encourage use of the institutional repository and the online journal system;
  • Work with colleagues at UIS and UIUC on joint initiatives in this arena.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program; three or more years professional library experience or equivalent professional experience; demonstrable understanding and interest in the current issues related to scholarly communication including open access and copyright; demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues, staff, and faculty; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to meet University standards in research, publication, and professional service commensurate with tenure requirements.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

Familiarity with the publishing industry; experience in collection development and/or electronic resources.


Research Data & Environmental Sciences Librarian

Under the direction of the Head of Services for Academic Programs, the Research Data/Environmental Sciences Librarian provides quality reference, consulting, and liaison services, teaches classes and workshops as assigned and contributes toward collection development activities. Develops and supports services for documenting and distributing research data. Develop and maintain expertise in data issues for libraries. Liaison to environmental sciences activities and departments within College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Individual leads and/or participates in other innovative projects in information delivery.

Position Description

Cornell University Libraries (CUL) seeks an energetic and productive staff member to join the Metadata Services Department http://metadata.library.cornell.edu/. Under the supervision of the Head of Metadata Services, the Research Data Specialist will play a key role in shaping Cornell University Library’s involvement in e-science, digital data curation, and supporting cyberscholarship for all disciplines. He or she will have the aptitude to stay abreast of scientific research trends, data documentation tools, and standards important for data exchange, reuse, and interoperability. Utilizing and applying various information technology tools for metadata manipulation and script execution is a key responsibility for this position. The Research Data Specialist will work at the intersection of digital data, technology, and metadata for the libraries. He or she will be responsible for consultation, assessment, and support services to facilitate all aspects of digital data curation. To be successful, close collaboration will be essential in working with library staff devoted to digital libraries, information technologies, public services, as well as the data working group and constituents of the Cornell life sciences initiative. The successful candidate will perform outreach and facilitate communication between the Libraries and research groups on all Cornell campuses.

Required Qualifications

MLS or Masters degree in science. One year of research laboratory experience. Ability to work well in a collaborative team-based environment. Strong communication (oral and writing), interpersonal, and presentation skills. Aptitude for and consistency in detailed work. Ability to analyze and to solve problems creatively and flexibly in a complex and rapidly changing environment. Strong service orientation and interest in information users' values and needs. Self-motivated and ability to multi-task. Expect to hire at the rank of Assistant Librarian or Sr. Assistant Librarian. Assistant Librarian rank is entry level for academic librarians with less than 5 years of professional experience.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge of computational tools and techniques for data management and manipulation. Aptitude for learning digital collection management, electronic resource management, and metadata standards and formats. Familiarity with at least one of the following metadata standards: Ecological Metadata Language (EML), Data Documentation Initiative (DDI), and FGDC Biological Data Profile. Familiarity with commonly used repository platforms (e.g. Fedora, DSpace, ePrints). Ability to use various tools for metadata manipulation and scripting. Experience with relational database design, XML/XSLT, Java, Perl, Python, or PHP. Familiarity with Semantic Web specifications and experience in XML DTD and W3C schema creation. Ability to write and obtain grants and to manage grant-funded projects. Prior work experience in an academic or special library.


Chief Technology Strategist

Cornell University Library (CUL) is excited to announce the establishment of a new senior level position, that of Chief Technology Strategist (CTS). As an information organization, CUL recognizes that technology issues permeate all aspects of its operations and strongly influence the mission of the academic library in a research university.

Reporting directly to the University Librarian and serving as a key member of the senior management team, the CTS will:

  • Participate in the development of a shared vision for CUL’s future that supports the mission of the University and is responsive to the changing information needs of its constituents.
  • Create and articulate an evolving technology strategy to support that vision, with ongoing input from key stakeholders
  • Identify the requisite technical solutions and priorities to achieve this strategy
  • Effectively communicate shared vision throughout CUL and the University’s IT environment

Assistant Professor, Tenure, Leading Science Librarian

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries seeks a highly energetic, creative, and knowledgeable, science librarian. This 12-month, tenure-track position follows the scholar-practitioner model provides instruction and reference for the sciences. Both entry-level and experienced librarians are encouraged to apply. The Science Librarian reports to the Chair of Research and Instructional Services.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership for e-science initiatives on campus.
  • Develop strong liaison relationships with faculty and students in the Biological Sciences and Chemistry Departments and other assigned subject areas.
  • Provide reference and instructional services in-person and via electronic means.
  • Evaluate, select, and review materials and information resources for inclusion in the collection; manage the collection budget in assigned areas.
  • Participate in departmental, library-wide, and university faculty committees.
  • Actively engages in ongoing professional development, scholarship, and service to the profession.

Qualifications:

Required

  • ALA accredited master's degree in library or information science, or an equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience.
  • Knowledge of the scholarly communication and research processes in the Sciences.
  • Academic training or BA/S degree in a physical or biological science or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to work effectively and creatively in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Demonstrated analytical, organizational, communication, and time-management skills.

Terms of Appointment: Twelve month appointment; 24 work days vacation per year; 11 paid holidays; 12 days annual sick leave (cumulative up to a maximum of 240 days) plus an additional 13 days (non-cumulative) per year if necessary; health insurance, requiring a small co-payment, is provided to employees (coverage for dependants may be purchased); participation in the State Universities Retirement System is required upon appointment (8% of member’s salary is withheld and is tax exempt until retirement); newly hired university employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security, and are subject to its deduction.
