The Association of Research Library publishes, both in hard copy and by Internet distribution, a variety of studies and tools for the reader who wishes to become better informed about this exploding area of publishing interest. If you are interested in acquiring any ARL publications in print, please contact the ARL offices in Washington, DC.
E-Journal Directory: Since 1991, ARL has sponsored publication of the Directory of Electronic Scholarly Journals, Newsletters, and Academic Discussion Lists. The fifth printed edition was published in May 1995. Basic information from the directory and an abridged ASCII version appears on the ARL gopher site.
E-Publishing Symposia: Since 1991, ARL has sponsored four symposia on electronic scholarly publishing; the second through fourth symposia were published in print form, and the papers of the third will be available in June 1995 on the ARL World Wide Web sites.
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Study: In 1992, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation prepared a study, published for the Foundation by ARL, titled University Libraries and Scholarly Communications. The full text also appears on both the ARL gopher and World Wide Web sites.
Since that time, the Mellon Foundation has sponsored a series of grants for electronic scholarly journal projects of varying scope and nature. A programmatic paper outlining that funding project was prepared by the Foundation and is available from the ARL site.
Association of American Universities Task Force Reports: In 1994, the Association of American Universitites organized three task forces in cooperation with ARL to examine special areas of urgent interest to libraries and scholars: (1) Acquisition of foreign materials; (2) Scientific/technical publishing; (3) Intellectual property in research universities. The full text is available in print and also appears on both the ARL gopher and World Wide Web sites.
New Internet Journal Announcements: In 1993, ARL's ongoing Directory project was enhanced by the creation of the on-line list "NewJour," which distributes announcements of new electronic journal projects. To subscribe, send e-mail to listserv@ccat.sas.upenn.edu, place nothing on the Subject: line, and include the message SUBSCRIBE NEWJOUR.
