Lars Bjørnshauge, Director of European Library Relations

Lars Bjørnshauge, a long-standing member of the SPARC Europe Board, is taking on the overall management of the 93-member library organization. He will continue to lead SPARC’s high-level education and outreach programs, capitalizing on his more than twenty years experience in the library community.

Prior to his decade-long service as Director of Lund Libraries, he held management positions at the Technical Knowledge Center and Library of Denmark (DTV) in Lyngby, as well as serving as head of department at the Royal Danish School of Librarianship in Copenhagen.

Lars has a masters degree in Public Administration from Roskilde University in Denmark. 

He is responsible for developing state-of-the art digital library services and for establishing the first transnational library consortia. His work contributed to the success of the first electronic-only library. Lars founded the Directory of Open Access Journals which is a comprehensive list of Open Access journals that use quality control systems for their content. 

Currently he is Vice-President of the Swedish Library Association. He was a past President of the Association of Danish Research Libraries and Senior Adviser to the National Library of Sweden. Lars is also a past member of the Open Access Working group of EUA (European University Association), Co-Chair of the LERU Working Group on Open Access, and co-author of the LERU Road Map on Open Access. He is also Chair of IFLAs Open Access Taskforce and co-author of IFLAs statement on Open Access.
