They’re protesting over the cost of academic journals and access to knowledge. And the focus of their anger is the handful of international publishing companies who control the lion’s share of the academic publishing market.

White House Petition Urging Open Access Reaches 25,000 Signers Jocelyn Kaiser, ScienceInsider, June 4, 2012 A petition urging the White House to expand federal policies requiring free access to taxpayer-funded research papers has gotten the 25,000 signatures needed to trigger a response. The petition was launched on 13 May by a group of open access advocates including Heather Joseph, executive director of Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition in Washington, D.C. "Requiring the published results of taxpayer-funded research to be posted on the Internet ... would speed the research process and increase the return on our investment in scientific research," the petition states.

That sentiment, expressed in April by Robert Darnton, the director of the Harvard library, is the reason why the rich profit margins enjoyed for so long by publishers like Reed Elsevier will prove unsustainable in the face of technological change.

White House Petitioned to Make Research Free to Access Zoë Corbyn, Nature, May 25, 2012 More than 17,000 people have signed an online petition urging US President Barack Obama to require all scientific journal articles resulting from US taxpayer-funded research to be made freely available online. The signatures, obtained within a week of the petition's launch after an active social media campaign, put it over two-thirds of the way towards the threshold that will require an official response from the White House.
