ALA Midwinter 2004: SPARC/ACRL Forum

Open Access: Getting From Here to There

It's hard to argue with the goal of open access to scholarly research articles. But how do we go about realigning firmly entrenched traditions and financial models to exploit the tremendous potential of our networked digital environment? The forum's expert panel, along with a record-setting audience of at least 300 ALA attendees, looked for strategies and answers.

SPARC Steering Committee chairman James Neal, serving as moderator, opened the meeting, which took place in San Diego on January 10th. He introduced the three presenters, who then took questions from the floor in response to their talks. The panel consisted of:

  1. Helen Doyle
    Who Pays for Open Access
Director of Development and Strategic Alliances
    Public Library of Science

  2. Henry Hagedorn
    Publishing by the Academic Library
    Editor, Journal of Insect Science

  3. Joseph Branin
Using the Library Budget to Drive Change
Director of Libraries, Ohio State University
