Libraries everywhere are grappling with the reality of sizable funding cuts. In this difficult and rapidly changing environment, assessment can play a valuable role by providing critical information to support budget reduction and program review. Please join us in this session to learn more about how good assessment can lead to better-informed decisions. We’ll discuss how libraries are using assessment results, statistics, performance measures/metrics and other management information data to support planning and decision making related to budget cuts. If you’re interested in sharing experiences at your library or have questions about the forum, please e-mail martha@arl.org.

Making the 100-year old ARL Statistics data collection program more relevant in today’s changing environment is an overarching goal. Counting serial subscriptions has not served libraries well in recent years as the focus often has been on counting in a meaningless way multiple subscriptions to the same title and ignoring the increasing amount of new serial titles libraries were making accessible through indexing/abstracting and other full-text database services. The new definitions of the ARL Statistics place emphasis on counting serial titles; this change took effect starting with the 2006-07 data collection. During this session we will discuss issues emerging from the data we currently collect and address best practices as they are emerging from the ARL Ad Hoc Task Force on Best Practices in Counting Serial Titles.
