The Institution column represents the institutions that have been part of the membership of the Chief Collection Development Officers Discussion Group. The membership includes the top or largest 40 in the Association of Research Libraries as defined by the membership index as well as the Center for Research Libraries, the National Libraries (Library of Congress, National Library of Medicine, and the National Agricultural Library), and the Smithsonian Insititution Library. While most of the membership is stable, there have been a few changes over the years. the Universityof Alberta, Howard University, and University of Maryland were members during the 1980s but dropped out in the 1990s. SUNY Buffalo and Hawaii have come into the membership in the 1990s. In almost all cases, the members represent one campus. The exceptions are noted for state schools with multiple campuses that are reflected in the budget.
The Inclusion Codes follows each institution and refers to what professional school libraries are reported in the budget figures submitted to the survey. The codes are: B=Business, E=Engineering, L=Law School, and M=Medical School. As these four areas are all expensive and frequenly have separate funding from the "main" library operation, their inclusion or exclusion from the budget figures is of considerable importance.
The Year column reflects the academic/fiscal years of the period reported.
Blanks in the spreadsheets mean that no data was submitted. These signify that either the survey was not submitted by the institution or that the institutions simply did not respond to a particular question. The reasons that an institution does not submit a survey at all include the institution is no longer a member of the group or it simply did not get around to submitting it for a particular year.
$0 means that no monies from the materials budget was expended for the institution in this category.
