ARL Digital Scholarship Institute


The ARL Digital Scholarship Institute (DSI) is hosting a summer workshop series on July 9, 16, 23, and 30, 2021 for previous attendees at one of its five-day institutes held from 2017 to 2019 and for colleagues who applied to the Summer 2020 institute that was cancelled due to COVID-19. The workshop series includes four two-hour sessions and will address these topics:

Tools for Emerging and Sustainable Digital Scholarship

In recent years, digital scholarship has moved towards sustainable and lateral infrastructure with minimal computing technologies. This session will address 1) web-based computational environments for learning to program and publishing code, and 2) static website frameworks for building digital collections and exhibits. Participants will come away with familiarity of various tools and methods, exemplary projects, and potential workflows and ideas for their own projects.

Digital Scholarship Pedagogy

The Digital Scholarship Pedagogy session will address the processes of developing objectives, scaffolding instruction, and assessing learning, and the additional requirements, resources, and considerations necessary for course integration or workshop and tutorial development. Participants will collaboratively examine examples of syllabi, workshops, and tutorials to observe various pedagogical approaches and practices. This session aims to familiarize participants with the key components of digital scholarship instructional design and pedagogical consultations.

Care as a Compass: Ground DS in Community (DEIA/SJ)

This workshop will explore how digital scholars can center the community and approach each phase of the research process with care by critically examining the provenance, portrayal, and management of data. We define care as advocating for all individuals and communities either impacted by or explicitly represented in the research process; recognizing and mitigating privilege, bias, and potential harm inherent within research tools and methodologies; and confronting any silences or gaps present in research materials. Together we will discuss championing community-centered project goals, navigating tools and institutional constraints, critically engaging data gaps and silences, new and/or alternative methodologies and practices, and participating in crucial conversations with project stakeholders. To help guide our conversation, we will visit existing digital projects in order to apply care concepts to practical situations. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on the intersections of care with their own approaches to digital scholarship.

Getting Started with Text Preparation and Analysis: A Hands-on Overview of Tools and Approaches

Are you interested in textual analysis but unsure about where to start? Join us for an interactive “no experience required” introduction to the fundamental concepts, processes, and methodological approaches for preparing and analyzing text. Following a general introduction to the topic, participants will be guided through prepared exercises that demonstrate how different software packages (OpenRefine, Python) can be used to prepare for and perform textual analysis. Those with no previous Python programming experience will be provided an opportunity to learn the basics through self-guided modules before the session (optional). Most importantly, participants will leave the session with more confidence using a variety of software and computational approaches, and a better understanding of where to find additional learning resources to further their training.
