Role Description

Western Libraries invites applications from innovative and service-oriented candidates to fill a librarian position within the Collections & Content Strategies Team.  The position will be for a term appointment starting in January 2019 and ending 30 June 2019.  

Reporting to the Head, Collections & Content Strategies, the Collections & Content Strategies Librarian will be a member of the Content Management, Discovery & Access (CMDA) Unit. CMDA comprises three teams: Collections & Content Strategies (CCS); Discovery, Description, & Metadata; and Acquisitions. The CCS Librarian will work collaboratively with members of these teams to anticipate and ensure proactive provision of access to high-quality content, regardless of format and in alignment with strategic priorities. The CCS team ensures that through strategic user-informed selection and management processes, users will have access to resources that support research, scholarship, and teaching at Western University.


As a member of the CCS team, the successful candidate may be called upon to:

  • Participate in development of strategic policies to guide how collections are developed and maintained,

  • Contribute to the management of physical and digital collections at Western Libraries,

  • Assist with established collection development procedures such as collection evaluation, monograph selection, and approval plan maintenance,

  • Assist with the implementation of new acquisitions programs (e.g. Evidence-based acquisitions, streaming video, etc.),

  • Communicate, consult, and collaborate in a timely manner with other CMDA teams,  other Western Libraries teams supporting the core user and foundational functions, and library users,

  • Assist with management of the acquisitions budget to ensure responsible expenditure.


Qualifications and Experience


  • Master's degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association (ALA), or equivalent degree, or a PhD degree in library and information science, or equivalent degree

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member respecting diversity, equality, and inclusiveness

  • Ability to communicate effectively in multiple formats to diverse audiences

  • Attention to detail

  • Ability to apply critical thinking when planning, prioritizing, and organizing work activities


  • Flexibility working with multiple assignments and timelines

  • Knowledge of collection development or collection management practices


  • A relevant undergraduate degree or work experience in the physical or life sciences

  • Skill in planning, implementing, and assessing projects

  • Aptitude for learning new technologies and software
