About the University of Toronto Libraries
The University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) system is the largest academic library in Canada and is ranked sixth among peer institutions in North America. The system consists of 42 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and information centres supports the teaching and research requirements of over 280 graduate programs, including over 60 professional programs, and about 700 undergraduate degree programs. In addition to more than 15 million volumes in 341 languages, the library system currently provides access to millions of resources in various forms, including, for example, electronic, audio-visual, and geospatial materials. UTL also has over 31,000 linear metres of archival material. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The Libraries' data centre houses more than 500 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.
The Opportunity
The University of Toronto seeks an adaptable, forward-thinking librarian with a strong service orientation to join the Scholarly Communications and Copyright Office (SCCO). The successful applicant will work closely with the Head, Scholarly Communications and Copyright Office to plan, implement, and promote services that support scholarly publishing, open science, and copyright education at the University of Toronto. This position will require internal consultation and liaison with faculty, university administration and library colleagues, and external consultation and liaison with other universities, agencies supporting open access, scholarly publishing, and copyright groups.
Representative duties and projects may include:
* Engaging in University wide education and outreach with university administration, faculty, students, and library colleagues, related to a variety of scholarly communication and copyright issues in teaching and research, which includes but is not limited to: author rights, trends in scholarly publishing, licensing, affordable course content, and open educational resources;
* Management of the increasingly popular Syllabus Service and copyright compliance efforts (including transactional license spending) related to use of material for teaching and research purposes;
* Development and maintenance of SCCO reporting efforts that aids in departmental and library-wide service planning;
* Conducts research and provides guidance on copyright and related issues to wide range of users, as appropriate;
* Participates in relevant library or campus-wide committees or working groups;
* Collaboration with library colleagues and relevant stakeholders to identify, develop, and implement services and training that strengthen scholarly communications and copyright competencies
* Monitoring and reporting on trends, legal requirements, and best practices related to copyright and scholarly publishing
Required Qualifications
* A degree from an accredited Master's level program in library and information studies
* Demonstrated interest in, and knowledge of, scholarly publishing; understanding of the evolving issues and emerging practices in scholarly sharing and open science
* Relevant experience in an academic library setting
* Knowledge of Canadian copyright law, regulations, and practices, particularly as they pertain to higher education
* Experience coordinating course reserves services and knowledge of trends and issues related to the support of learning and teaching material
* Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse group of stakeholders with a varied range of interests
* Excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated training and presentation skills
* Excellent time management, organizational, and problem solving skills with the ability to lead multiple concurrent projects
* Capacity to thrive in a dynamic environment, with shifting needs and priorities of library and stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
* Bachelor of Laws (LL.B)/Juris Doctor (J.D.), or equivalent course or work experience
* Understanding of the workflows related to eResource acquisitions and licensing practices
* Experience engaging in collaborative projects and programs at the local, regional, national, and/or international level
Salary and Terms of Appointment
This is a permanent status stream position to be hired at the Librarian II rank. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications.
