The Iowa State University Library seeks a dynamic and forward-thinking leader to oversee the Metadata Services Department. This position will lead the Library’s efforts to identify and develop metadata services while also overseeing and improving existing practices, workflows, and functions. Success in this position will require someone who is comfortable with trial and error, curious, enjoys risk, encourages innovative thinking, quickly adopts and abandons new approaches, and embraces failure. The Head of Metadata Services will collaborate extensively with metadata stakeholders inside and outside the Library, bringing technical expertise, vision, and an ability to identify and implement innovative metadata and cataloging solutions that enhance the access and discoverability of digital assets. Solid skills in personnel management and change management are essential, as is the ability to develop productive professional relationships. The successful candidate will bring an understanding of current and emerging metadata and cataloging standards, controlled vocabularies, models, applications, and initiatives as well as a familiarity with information processing (programming) and emerging trends and best practices in task automation. This position will be filled as either a Librarian II or III.
 
A Librarian II will be able to demonstrate, through evidence, increasing skills and leadership potential. A Librarian III will demonstrate continued effectiveness, through substantial evidence, effective leadership and established research interest or professional activities.
Important attributes will include how to plan, organize, set and achieve goals. Having the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate will be essential to your success, and you’ll be working alongside us to achieve this goal. You’ll also need to embrace the Library’s core values, demonstrate collegiality, and have strong commitment to public service and the land grant mission.
