Reporting to the Associate Dean of Technology & Special Collections, and at the rank of Assistant Librarian, the University Archivist has primary responsibility for the appraisal and acquisition of all formats of university records that are of enduring historical, evidential, or administrative value. As part of the LSU Libraries Special Collections curatorial team he/she will articulate a vision for identifying and collecting university records and will work to document diverse voices and experiences that demonstrate the enduring impact of LSU within the state of Louisiana and beyond. 
 
Responsibilities
 
  • 50% Surveys campus departments and solicits a wide variety of permanently valuable administrative files and born-digital records for transfer to the University Archives; assists LSU departments in interpreting records retention schedules and ensures the timely transfer of records to the archives; reviews and revises retention schedules as appropriate; liaises with the Louisiana State Archives and other external organization for review and approval of records schedules; prepares collection development policies and develops collection strategies for the University Archives.
  • 25% Promotes the use of University Archives and Special Collections resources through outreach, public programming, and instruction activities; provides advanced reference and research assistance to those using University Archives and other Special Collections materials; may collaborate with the Exhibitions Coordinator and curators to mount exhibitions based on Special Collections' holdings. 
  • 10% Collaborates with the Head of Technical Services to establish priorities for processing as well as make determinations for the level of processing for incoming transfers and donated material; collaborates with the Head of Digital Programs & Services to develop digitization and preservation strategies and to improve discoverability of University Archives materials.
  • 15% Works to meet tenure and promotion requirements through research, scholarship, and service. 
Minimum Qualifications
 
ALA- accredited MLIS/MIS in library and information science or advanced degree in a relevant discipline with applicable experience.
 
Three years of experience in an archival or special collections environment working directly with collections.
 
Experience in appraisal, providing reference service in an archival setting, and outreach activities; project management skills; demonstrated interpersonal and collaborative skills.
 
Preferred Qualifications
 
Experience with appraisal and acquisition of university or institutional records; experience with electronic records and born digital materials; experience with ArchivesSpace (or Archon, Archivists Toolkit) and Aeon; records management certification or extensive experience.
