This position is located in the Continuing Resources and Collections (CRaC) department, which resides in the Collections, Acquisitions and Discovery (CAD) Division. The CRaC Department's role is evolving to encompass the budgeting, identification, selection, acquisition, licensing, management and evaluation of print and electronic information resources, both continuing and one-time, for the UNLV Libraries.

ROLE of the POSITION

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries seeks a pro-active and innovative librarian to provide leadership and expertise for acquisition functions across all subject areas, formats and channels of delivery. This new position, in the Collections, Acquisitions and Discovery (CAD) division will report to the Head of Continuing Resources and Collections (CRaC), and will play a lead role as the CRaC department evolves and expands its acquisitions activities. The incumbent will have direct supervisory responsibility for operations, workflows and special projects involving ordering, payment, receipt, processing and access to information resources of all types.

The Lead Acquisitions Librarian will join the Libraries at an exciting time of ongoing transition. The Libraries successfully migrated to Ex Libris' Alma/Primo in December 2017 and is continuously reviewing workflows and procedures to ensure that we are fully utilizing the functionality of Alma, and that our staff have the training and skills to perform optimally in the migrated environment.

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Ensure that resources are acquired in a timely, fiscally responsible, and effective manner that complies with University legal and financial policies and requirements.
  • Lead the department's acquisitions team, consisting of four staff members - 2 Library Faculty (including the incumbent) and 2 FTE classified staff members. Establish departmental priorities and procedures and develop appropriate documentation. Proactively work with staff to provide goals, expectations, clearly assigned tasks and establish best practices in concert with department and division needs and priorities
  • Lead the acquisition of monographs (both print and electronic) and tangible materials for the collections using one-time, approval, and user-driven collections budgets. Collaborate with Discovery Services department to integrate acquisitions processes with cataloging workflows for vendor services including YBP, Midwest, and Theodore Front
  • Lead the acquisition and maintenance of serials and e-resources. Responsibilities include:

    • Plan and coordinate e-resource lifecycle management efforts for databases, e-journals, e-books, data sets and streaming media including ordering, invoicing, activation, renewal, access and authentication
    • Troubleshooting and resolve e-resource access problems
    • Coordinate the acquisition, renewal and maintenance of print serials
  • In collaboration with the Head of CRaC assist with budget management by providing expenditure projections, monitor expenditure of the $10M+ collections budget, manage vendor accounts and provide data as needed to assist in evaluation of resources
  • Establish and maintain communications with external service providers, including publishers, vendors, consortia, content providers, and technology suppliers and collaborate internally with library staff across the CAD division and the Libraries to provide optimal access to resources for the University community.
  • Serve as a member of the Collections Committee to provide expertise on acquisitions, e-resource management and access, and subscription budget planning
  • As a tenure-track library faculty member, the incumbent will be expected to work collaboratively with others; engage in scholarly activities; and provide service to the university, the community, and the profession in accordance with Libraries and University standards for promotion and tenure

QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires an earned Master's Degree in library or information science from an American Library Association accredited program by the date of appointment.

  • Competence and sensitivity in working at a university in which students, faculty, and staff are highly diverse with regard to many facets of identity, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, income, level of educational attainment, and religion.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging issues, trends, workflows, business models and best practices in the changing landscape of library acquisitions, gained through at least three years of experience
  • A minimum of two years as a manager/supervisor
  • Demonstrated skills in time management and workflow management and writing documentation
  • Excellent analytical skills, including complex problem solving
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work collegially in a team environment exhibiting organizational, interpersonal and communications skills.

Preferred

  • A record of professional engagement and scholarship.
  • Experience working with Ex Libris' Alma/Primo
  • Experience interacting with campus enterprise systems such as Workday, Peoplesoft etc. for library acquisitions and budget tracking

SALARY RANGE

This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position at Rank II (equivalent to Assistant Professor). Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions. The position is contingent upon funding with a minimum starting salary of $65,000.
