UCR Library Diversity Fellow The University of California, Riverside (UCR) seeks a dynamic, user-oriented, early-career librarian to participate in a two-year diversity fellowship program. This program will provide the incumbent with a supportive environment to gain the requisite knowledge, skills, and competencies to thrive in an academic setting, and aims to increase the hiring pipeline of diverse and talented colleagues. Librarians who are interested in pursuing academic librarianship and have demonstrated an interest in, and commitment to, diversity, equity, and inclusion within the library community are particularly encouraged to apply. The incumbent will have access to experienced library leaders and a cohort/network for sharing ideas, resources, best practices, and other opportunities to help gain the professional skills and competencies necessary for success. Located an hour's drive to the east of Los Angeles, an hour west of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley, an hour east of ocean beaches, ninety minutes north of San Diego, and an hour south of mountain ski resorts, UCR is located in an area of dramatic landscapes and rich cultural traditions. The University is a dynamic, aggressively-developing land grant research institution dedicated to preparing its diverse student body to be successful competitors in the world marketplace of ideas. UCR boasts the first new School of Medicine to open on the West Coast in 43 years; a new School of Public Policy; and the Bourns College of Engineering, ranked 10th in the world according to an international ranking organization. The UCR Library is a critical partner in preparing UCR's students to be globally competitive while simultaneously preparing them for careers in the Inland Empire and beyond. The mission of the UCR Library is no less than to bring the world's information resources to the UCR community and to ensure that UCR students, faculty, and staff have the skills to fully exploit those resources to change the world for the better. The UCR Library is a team of intensely collaborative, forward-thinking colleagues dedicated to providing excellent services to our students, faculty, and community members in a rapidly evolving information environment. The successful candidate will be technologically sophisticated; committed to problem-solving in local, regional, national, and international arenas; and able to develop innovative solutions to complex problems; and a dynamic and effective leader. The UCR Library is comprised of three facilities housing more than 3,800,000 volumes, 940,000 electronic books, 97,000 print and electronic journals, and 2,300,000 microforms. The Library provides services to more than 22,000 students and nearly 2,000 faculty and other academics in an institutional environment planning for and experiencing extensive growth. The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic staff of 214, including 26 FTE librarians, 90 FTE support personnel, and 98 students in building a research library of excellence within a dynamic and diverse university ranked among the top 50 in the nation. The UCR Library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). Among the unique collections of the UCR Library is the Eaton Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy, the Water Resources Collections & Archives, the Rupert Costo Library of the American Indian, the Paul Chou Collection of Chinese history and culture, the George Brown Papers, the Tomas Rivera Papers, and the Inland Empire Memories Initiative. Information about the UCR Libraries is available at http://library.ucr.edu. The UCR Library is an integral part of the University of California library system. With collections totaling 30 million volumes, UC's more than 100 libraries are surpassed in size on the American continent only by the Library of Congress collection. In addition, UC's California Digital Library (CDL) provides the core of the University's digital collections. CDL also assists UC to share resources and holdings more effectively, and provides leadership in applying technology to the development of library collections and services. Organizationally situated within the UC Office of the President, the CDL operates in close collaboration with all UC campuses and UC professional librarians are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining unit; The University Council-American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This position is in the bargaining unit. Responsibilities: Reporting to the Deputy University Librarian, the Library Diversity Fellow will initially participate in a month-long orientation to the library and each department and unit. This will be followed by two 10-month-long embedded rotations in two respective departments. For each rotation the Fellow will learn the functions of the selected department and contribute to departmental services, as well as work on a project or projects focused on some aspect of departmental need. To ensure the best match of skills and interests, selection of specific departments and associated projects will occur as a collaborative process between the Fellow and Fellowship supervisor during the initial month-long on-boarding. The final three months will be spent on professional development, including CV review, interviewing techniques, relevant training opportunities, and completion of the capstone project. The Fellow will be required to demonstrate their investigation of the impact on diversity, equity and inclusion either through the capstone project, or through at least one project selected at the department level. Capstone Project: The Fellowship program includes a capstone project. The goal of the capstone is to hone the Fellow's skills and experience in planning, organizing and executing a major project that will contribute significantly to the UCR Library, and to the profession. The capstone project may feature considerably in the Fellow's marketability and success. Over the course of the first year and as the Fellow's becomes more knowledgeable and engaged within the Library, the Fellow should be considering and discussing possible capstone topics. During the latter months of year one, the Fellow, in consultation with the Fellows Program supervisor and other library stakeholders, will submit written proposals for one or two possible capstone projects to the supervisor. The supervisor and relevant department heads will review the submissions and select the proposal with the greatest potential to further advance the Library. The final product, including the Fellow's findings, conclusions, and recommendations, will be shared with library staff via an oral presentation. Minimum Qualifications: • Master of Library and Information Studies from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent; degree must be completed between May 2017 and June 2019. • Demonstrated excellence in oral, written, and interpersonal communications. • Demonstrated commitment to outstanding user-centered public service and teamwork. • Ability to analyze and adapt to evolving technologies. • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, professionally and independently within a complex organization and with all levels of students, faculty and staff. • Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate and implement projects. Proven ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure. Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment within a diverse, and complex organization. • Demonstrated commitment to, diversity, equity, and inclusion within the library community • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work successfully in an intensely collaborative environment with a broad range of people from culturally diverse backgrounds including colleagues, administrators, students, faculty, donors, and alumni. Preferred Qualifications • Understanding of, or experience with project leadership and/or management • Working knowledge of library management systems. • UCR is a world-class research university with an exceptionally diverse undergraduate student body.
